Cayetano pegs Big Isle,
Campbell for new prison

Gov. Ben Cayetano today said he will make a recommendation by year's end on where a new prison should be built to help alleviate prison overcrowding.

His first choice would be the Big Island, followed by the Campbell Industrial Park feed lot on Oahu, Cayetano said. He said he favors the Big Island because it has more space and because a correctional facility would help boost the island's economy.

Cayetano said he is exploring having a private firm experienced in working with unionized correctional officers build the new facility and run it. Another idea is to have the private firm build the prison and lease it back to the state, he added.

The year-end deadline gives the administration time to win cooperation and support for his recommendation, Cayetano said.

Quake shakes Big Isle
early this morning

HILO -- An earthquake felt as a single strong, rolling jolt rocked the Big Island at 5:47 a.m. today.

Police said a utility pole in Hilo was burned when electric lines were disrupted, and numerous burglar alarms were also set off.

A minor dirt slide took place on the Hawaii Belt Road at Honomu.

Kona police reported the quake was felt strongly there, and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said additional reports came in from Ocean View near the southern end of the island.

Don Swanson, scientist in charge of the observatory, said the preliminary reading on its size was at least 5.2 in magnitude, and possibly larger. The quake was located at the Puna coast where lava flows have entered the sea for the past several years, but it is not connected with the lava flows.

Three people injured
in head-on collision

Three people were injured yesterday in a head-on auto collision in Laie near Pounders Beach.

A 48-year-old man who was driving a pickup truck is in guarded condition at Queen's Hospital while a man and a woman from Japan, both 31, are in fair condition at the same hospital.

Police traffic investigators said a rented convertible may have crossed over the center line, causing the collision. The accident was reported at 2:10 p.m.
