singles out Aluli

COMPOSER-entertainer Irmgard Farden Aluli was honored by the Honolulu Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters at the Pacific Club Monday. Besides Irmgard, her group Puamana performed, as did Robert Cazimero, Melissa Short, Anuhea Brown, Iwalani Kahalewai and Pa'ahana. Keith Haugen wrote a song for Irmgard, "Ke Ali'i Wahine Aloha," and gave it to her on her 85th birthday Oct. 7. Monday was Keith's first public performance of the song. Imrgard's twins, Mihana Souza and Inoa Aluli, mark their 48th birthdays tomorrow. Mihana and Chuck Souza's daughter, Mahina, turned 20 Wednesday ...

THE SECOND annual 10-kilometer fun run in honor of the seven members of The Order of the Silver Bicep took place on Tantalus Thursday. The Silver Bicep honorees, who must be 60 or older, are: Harry "The Horse" Siegmund, Robert Spicer, Mike Elinski, Lou Fulton, Burl Pepper, John Humphreys and Clark Hatch, whose fitness center sponsored the event. The honorees and invited guests taking part followed the run with pizza, sodas and fun. "The Horse" brought his accordion, and his wife, Peggy Anne Siegmund, penned special words to "Old Man River": "Old male runners, those old male runners, they must know something but don't say nothing, they just keep running, they keep on running along. They don't wash often, they drink alotta water, they never listen, although they oughter, but old male runners, they just keep running along" ...

BANKOH'S Scott Balke had a big day Sunday. It was Father's Day and his son, Andrew, was christened at St. Andrew's. Attending a Sunset Grill brunch given by Scott and his wife, Ann, were godparents Tisa Ferguson, Jim McGuire, Peter Fulgenzi and Susan Hayes. Other guests included Scott's parents, Ed and Eunice Balke from Houston, Barbara Tunno, Jim and Cherye Pierce, Chuck and Anne Swanson, Beth Kyman and daughter, Lauren, David and Carol Ann Ramsour and Karen Swanson, who conducted the baptism ...

Elizabeth speaks out

ELIZABETH LINDSEY, a former Miss Hawaii, took a break from working on a Warren Beatty film in L.A. to come home for last weekend's Miss Hawaii Pageant. Elizabeth is getting heavily involved as a speaker, giving talks on striving for excellence. She speaks to both corporate and academic groups. She delivered a keynote address at the U. of Utah in May. Elizabeth knows something about excellence, as she is enjoying highly successful careers in acting, filmmaking and education ...

DAN GORDON, 36, the Gordon in Gordon Biersch, blew into town this week from California to push Gordon Biersch beer, now sold for the first time in bottles. "I was made in Hawaii," brewmaster Gordon said Tuesday night at his Aloha Tower restaurant. "Two months before I was born, my parents, who lived in Ewa Beach, went back to the mainland." Kanoe "Tootsie" Cazimero Gray recalled that Gordon's mom, Margo, taught hula at the Moana Hotel in the '50s. Gordon, a local boy at heart, said he gets a tour of local hot spots on his visits from Brickwood Galuteria. Kapakahi - Isaac Akuna on steel guitar, Wendell Kailihiwa on bass and guitarist Hoku Keolanui - performed at the party, along with hula dancer Ku'uipo Dash. G.M. Joe Glarner and chef Keith Steel Kong kept the heavy pupus coming. The G.B. staff gifted Gordon with a 9.6-foot surfboard ...

Holden carves a crucifix

MASTER wood carver Robert Holden was contracted by Protestants at Ft. DeRussy to carve a cross for their services. When the Catholics saw what a good job he did, they had him carve a crucifix for them. The crucifix is impressive. Holden said the project drained him ... There's plenty to see at American Savings Bank's "Even Better Home Show" which winds up at Blaisdell Center tomorrow at 6 p.m. ...
