Chefs share meal,
cooking tips

Tom Wong, executive sous chef of The Royal Hawaiian, and Daniel Delbrel, executive chef of Sheraton Moana Surfrider, will create a four-course meal for participants to sample, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Coconut Grove Lanai, The Royal Hawaiian.

Fifteen people will receive an apron, recipes, a bottle of wine, a signed copy of "Great Chefs of Hawaii," and cooking tips. Cost: $75 per person.

Wong and Delbrel hold quarterly cooking classes as part of "On the Front Burner: the Flavors of Hawaii." Information/registration: 931-8409.

Wine and dine: The wines of Daniel Gehrs of Monterey, Calif., who is also a winemaker for Zaca Mesa Winery, will be featured at a special dinner 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Byron II. The menu includes smoked trout, marinated scallops, and a pepper lamb loin with polenta and ratatouille. Featured wines are Daniel Gehr Fume En Vogue 1996, Daniel Gehr Le Cheniere 1996, Daniel Gehr Pinot Blanc 1996, Daniel Gehr Fleetwood 1996 and Zaca Mesa, Z Cuvee 1995. "Good Cooks' Cook Off": Uncle Ben's is looking for the parent that can make a great-tasting family dinner in 30 minutes or less. Children aged 12 and under can enter their mom or dad by sending an essay of 150 words or less describing why their mom or dad is a good cook. Along with the essay, each child must also send an original drawing of their parent cooking a delicious dinner

Eight regional finalists will be flown to New York in September and each parent will be provided a cooking station, food staples and Uncle Ben's Brand rice products for mom or dad to prepare their winning dinner in 30 minutes. The eight children will become part of the judging panel.

The grand prize winner will receive $5,000; second place, $2,000; and third place, $1,000. The prizes include a supply of Uncle Ben's products and winners will also have the chance to work with a famous chef.
