Smaller can be better at Pankow

Michael Betz is managing smaller special projects for Charles Pankow Builders Ltd.

"We're trying to promote the design-build method as a way to deliver construction," Betz said.

Pankow combines design and construction to save time and keep costs down. The special projects group does "smaller-faster" jobs like the recent general store renovation for Molokai Ranch, which took only three months, Betz said.

His background in Pennsylvania includes work on the $650 million airport in Pittsburgh. In Hawaii, Betz has worked as project manager for Summit Construction Inc. and American Constructors Hawaii.

He has a bachelors degree in civil engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

Charles Pankow Builders Ltd. is one of the largest general contractors in the country, with $400 million in work annually. Its Honolulu office opened in 1965.
