Best of the West
tournament at
Rainbow Stadium

The annual Best of the West high school baseball tournament returns to Rainbow Stadium for a fifth year, with four teams from Hawaii and six from the mainland competing from June 23 -27.

The Hawaii entries are Leeward-Hawaii, East Honolulu, West Oahu and the Oahu All-Stars.

Returning for a fifth consecutive time are Arizona's Tucson Stars and defending champion Phoenix. Also entered are the Central Valley (Calif.) All-Stars, the Santa Cruz (Calif.) Pirates, Storm Club Baseball (Cincinnati) and Martinez (Calif.) American League.

There is no admission charge. The tournament schedule will be made available at a later date.

SMALL CIRCLE JUJITSU: Top martial artists from around the world will be in Waikiki this weekend to honor Professor Wally Jay, founder of the Small Circle Jujitsu system.

Jay, a former resident of Hawaii, will be back in town to celebrate his 80th birthday.

The Small Circle Jujitsu International convention will be held at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel tomorrow through Sunday.

A registration and T-shirt party is scheduled for tomorrow. There will be clinics and demonstrations Saturday and Sunday.

RAINFORESTRUN:The fourth annual Run for the Rain Forest 5K will be held Sunday, June 29, starting at the Manoa Recreation Center at 7:30 a.m.

Entry fee is $18 for adults, $12 for children and seniors ( 60 and over). Entries must be postmarked by June 14. Late registration is $25.

Entry forms are available at 7-Eleven Stores, athletic stores or by calling 528-3116.

Proceeds go toward The Nature Conservancy's work to protect Hawaii's rain forests.

POLO SUNDAY: The El Dorado Polo Club of Palm Springs, Calif., will provided the opposition for the Honolulu Polo Club in Sunday's 2 p.m. match at the Waimanalo Polo Grounds.

The gates open at 12:30 p.m. General admission is $3 per person, with children under 10 free.

MEN'S SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: The Men's Open Summer Slam softball tournament is scheduled for June 28-29 at Hauula.

The entry fee for the 16-team event is $175. The entry deadline is Monday.

RAMSNEEDCOACHES: Radford High School needs a swimming coach and a boys' volleyball coach for the upcoming school year. Anyone interested should call Athletic Director Jim Alegre at 421-4229 to schedule an interview.

BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS: The 19th annual Hawaiian Islands Bodybuilding Championship will be held June 21 at the Blaisdell Center Concert Hall at 6:30 p.m.

Also that evening, the Junior Hawaiian Islands Championship and the NPC Hawaii Fitness Contest will be staged.

Guest posers will include Kevin Levrone, who placed second in the 1995 Mr. Olympia contest and third in 1996, and Kim Chizevsky, who won the Ms. International title at the 1996 Arnold's Classic and the 1996 Ms. Olympia title.

SKATERS TO MAINLAND: The Mililani In-line Hockey Association (MIHA) will send three all-star teams to the July 31-Aug. 4 NARC Summer Cup in Las Vegas.

Making the trip are the Disco Freaks (12 and under), coached by Marc Asato and Ted Estrella; Lanakila (14 under), coached by Kelly Mayne and Kevin Walker, and the Hawaiian Punch (17 under), coached by John Read and Kimo Willett.

The teams will warm up for the mainland competition in the Aloha State Games and the USA Hockey In-line's state regional tournament in Kona, June 27-29.

MIHA begins its summer season on June 21 with games every Saturday at Noholoa Park in Mililani. For additional information, contact Jeanne Furukawa at 627-0036.

GOLF TOURNAMENT: The Ewa Beach Clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Club of Honolulu will hold its third annual fund-raising golf tournament June 27 at the Ewa Beach Golf Club.

Entry fees of $100 per person include refreshments, awards and tournament dinner. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE: The first Challenger Division Goodwill baseball tournament, hosted by the Pearl City Little League, is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. June 28 at Pacheco Park.

The Challenger Division of Little League is a program for mentally and physically challenged youth that allows for full participation.

Pearl City and Kailua National are the only Little Leagues to offer this division in the state.

MAYOR'S SUNDAY ON WHEELS: The monthly Mayor's Sunday on Wheels bike ride is June 29, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Koko Crater Botanic Garden.

The course is a 1.5-mile dirt road that loops through Koko Crater. Mountain bikes are recommended and helmets required in the garden, which is not normally open for cycling.
