Summer baseball
prep league formed

The Honolulu Interscholastic Baseball League, comprised of 21 teams representing 14 high school teams from Oahu, opens its inaugural season Monday.

The season runs through July 28 with day games Monday through Saturday at various high school fields. Affiliated with the Continental Amateur Baseball Association (CABA), the HIBL will send an all-star team to the CABA 18-under World Series in Homestead, Fla., in August.

"It's basically a continuation of the high school season," said Punahou School baseball coach Pal Eldredge, the league secretary. "The response has been tremendous. It's something we've talked about having for a long time and finally had the motivation and impetus to put it together."

From the ILH, Punahou and Mid-Pacific have entered three teams, Kamehameha and Iolani two, and Damien, St. Louis and University/Hawaii Baptist one. Representing the OIA are Mililani, Pearl City, Kaiser, Kalaheo, Kailua, Kaimuki, McKinley and Aiea.

The league commissioner is Dunn Muramaru of Mid-Pacific. Other board members include Dean Yonamine (Iolani), Vern Ramie (Kamehameha) and Dave Eldredge (Punahou).
