Name: Patrick J. Carter
Age: 17
School: Seabury Hall
Favorite subject: Mathematics
Pastime: Mountain biking
Future: Economics professor
Patrick J. Carter wants to become an economics professor because it combines his interest in two fields -- mathematics and drama. A high probability of success
Carter, recently named a National Merit Scholar, scored a perfect 800 in the mathematics part of the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test. He scored 750 of 800 in the verbal portion.
At Seabury Hall, Carter has acted in theatrical productions and helped produce sets and lighting.
"It's kind of an outlet for creative energy," Carter said. "It's probably one of the reasons why I want to be a professor. I want to be slightly entertaining. I like the idea of teaching."
Carter will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall on a couple of scholarships. He will receive up to $2,000 a year on a United Airlines Foundation Merit Scholarship and tuition and books from the Navy's ROTC.
The son of William and Mary Lou Carter also is senior class treasurer, the school newspaper editor, president of a mountain bike club and captain of a Junior Engineering Technical Society.
Carter has completed several advanced placement classes and is taking a third-year college engineering course in probability and statistics.
Teacher Charles Glennon said when Carter entered the ninth grade at Seabury, he had a weak mathematics background but he began to improve remarkably. "As a person, he's modest, alert, he listens, and he's interested in ideas," Glennon said.
