Can you help me figure this out? I bought a brand new car on April 20. When I got my license plate, it came with a March registration sticker. I called motor vehicle and the lady said that no matter what day of the month I bought the car, that month is considered the No. 1 month and the sticker then covers the next 11 months, for a total of 12 months. But why is it that when you get a safety check in May, you get a sticker good until the next May? Safety, registration tags
fall under separate rulesThe answer is that there are two different sets of rules and regulations, put out by the state Department of Transportation, for motor vehicle registration and safety checks, said David Mau, assistant licensing administrator for the city Motor Vehicles and Licensing Division.
The law covering vehicle registration is set accordingly for tax purposes, with the taxes computed on a monthly basis, he said. But safety inspections are based on a calendar year, by date, and safety stickers indicate the month of inspection, Mau said.
