








Derek Ho, the former world surfing champion from Hawaii, suffered a possible career-ending knee injury during a practice session for the Quiksilver Pro in Grajagan, East Java, yesterday. Surf champ Ho
suffers knee injuryHo, 32, severed the patella tendon in his right knee when he was hit by his surfboard in six-foot waves. He will return to Hawaii for surgery.
"I just got through telling Tom Carroll that we all need to slow down," Ho was quoted as saying. "We'd all been traveling a long time and were eager to get in the water. We were pretty tired, too. Ironically, on the very next wave, I got hurt. I guess that's me gone."
TSUNAMI PLAY ON: The Hawaii Tsunami soccer team will play the Los Angeles Fireballs tonight at 8 p.m. and then again on Sunday at 2 p.m., at Cooke Field.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Children under 3 are free. Children wearing AYSO or HYSA uniforms get in free Sunday.
BOXING SMOKER: There will be an 11-bout boxing smoker at the 50th State Fair tomorrow, starting at 2 p.m.
The main event will feature the Army's Yamar Resto, Hawaii's representative in the recent National Golden Gloves Tournament, against Sam Guerrero of the Kailua Boxing Club at 156 pounds.
Admission is included in the cost of entry to the fair grounds.
WAHINE CAGE SCHOLARS: The University of Hawaii women's basketball team again finished with the highest cumulative grade point average among varsity teams for the spring semester.
The Wahine had a team GPA of 3.41, with four players attaining perfect 4.0s: Kendis Leeburg, Tiffany Fujimoto, Michelle Macintyre and Maj Forsberg. Five of the remaining eight team members scored above a 3.0 and no member had lower than a 2.75 GPA.
SAILING CLASS: A free sailing and seamanship class, taught by Flotilla 20, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, June 9-23, at the Keehi Lagoon Small Boat Harbor meeting room.

HPU VOLLEYBALL CLINIC: The Hawaii Pacific University women's volleyball program is offering two summer clinics for youngsters entering grades 7-12.
The Sea Warriors Volleyball Clinics are June 21-22 and July 19-20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Andrew's Priory Gym. Each session cost $50 and is limited to 28 participants.

JUNIOR LIFEGUARDS: The Hawaiian Lifeguard Association will be conducting five-day courses this summer that are designed to familiarize teens with ocean and beach skills.
The program is open to boys and girls, ages 13-17 as of June 1 who have basic swimming skills.
The sessions are June 16-20, June 23-27, June 30-July 3, July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25, July 28-Aug. 1 at Kailua Beach Park, Ala Moana Beach Park, Pokai Bay and Ehukai Beach Park.

FORD ISLAND DUATHLON: The seventh annual Ford Island Run Bike Run Duathlon will be held June 21 with a 7 a.m. start.
The duathlon is open to the public and is comprised of a 2.7-mile run, 8.1-mile bike ride and another 2.7-mile run.
