Convicted molester
in work program

What ever happened to John Murakami, the former Maui division chief of the Hawaii Government Employees Association, who was sentenced to a year in prison for child molestation?

John A. Murakami, 47, who began serving his sentence last Aug. 30, is in a prison program that allows him to work during the day and return to a private residence in central Maui at night.

His movements are monitored by an electronic bracelet that he wears 24 hours a day.

Murakami, who has been required to undergo psychological counseling, has been participating in the residential work program since April 3. His sentence ends Aug. 30.

He pleaded no contest to two counts of third-degree sexual assault for fondling a 12-year-old girl in 1992 and 1993. The girl was the daughter of a friend.

Maui Circuit Judge E. John McConnell rejected a plea agreement that sought a sentence of 120 days in jail. Murakami could have faced 10 years in prison.
