Surgery puts Sid on disabled list

HOUSTON -- Houston Astros left-handed pitcher Sid Fernandez had an operation for an arm ailments that will sideline them for several weeks.

Fernandez, of Hawaii, had discomfort in his left arm and underwent exploratory arthroscopic surgery yesterday in Birmingham, Ala. An arthritic condition was found on his left elbow, so the doctor removed scar tissue and then smoothed the cartilage surface.

"He'll begin range of motion exercises in the next 10-12 days with the goal of being able to do some throwing in about four weeks," said Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker.



Two Hawaii lifters win national titles

Mililani's Junior Faamausili and Gary Ferstler of Kailua won national titles at the U.S. Powerlifting Federation National Masters Championships Sunday in Philadelphia.

Ferstler won the 198-pound class with a total of 1,703 pounds. He also set an American weight class record for the deadlift with 716 pounds.

Faamausili won the super heavyweight division with a total of 1,903 pounds for three lifts (squat, bench and deadlift). Finishing second was Hawaii's Odd Haugen, with a 1,760-pound total.

SUCCESS IN KAYAKS: Former Hawaii residents Chris Ball and Kathy Colin were part of three winning U.S. K-4 crews at last weekend's Bosbaan International Regatta in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Ball, who lives in Irvine, Calif., and his teammates won the 500- and 1,000-meter men's races. Ball also placed second in the K-2 500-meter race, teaming with Oregon's John Mooney.

Colin, now living in Seattle, was part of the winning women's K-4 1,000-meter boat. She placed second in the K-1 1,000-meter race.

JUNIOR TENNIS: The Junior Team Tennis Spring Sectional Championships, sanctioned by the United State Tennis Association/Ha-waii Pacific Tennis Association, will be held tomorrow through Sunday at the Turtle Bay Hilton Tennis Center and Brigham Young University-Hawaii.

The event features the top 27 teams that qualified through league play during the spring season.

FERNANDEZ FOUNDATION GIFT: The Sid and Noelani Fernandez Foundation has donated $1,500 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Honolulu for uniform T-shirts.

More than 200 youngsters will wear the shirts bearing the initials "DMG" in memory of Noelani Fernandez's father, Don Mike Gillis, who was killed last year.

Kaiser High product Sid Fernandez, a pitcher for the Houston Astros, underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery yesterday. He is expected to return to the Astros' pitching rotation after the All-Star break.

ODKF AWARDS GIVEN: Seven athletes, two teams and three races received grants from the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.

Athletes given $500 each were: Mahealani Lum, kayaker, to attend the Junior World Kayaking Trials in Atlanta; Baba Merino, baseball, to attend the AAU 12-year-old All-Star competition in Minneapolis; Kanoa Ostrem, volleyball, to run coaching and officiating clinics in the Cook Islands; Theresa Vill, swimmer, to attend the National Fin Championships in Los Angeles.

Sisters Nicole and Melissa Smith of Captain Cook were awarded $300 each to continue their rodeo participation. Kauai's Clayton Ventura was given $300 to defray expenses at various bodyboard events on the mainland.

A $5,000 grant went to the July 4 Macfarlane Regatta, the only surf race of the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association season. Receiving $1,000 grants were Lanikai Canoe Club to assist with the cost of the 30th Duke Kahanamoku Long Distance Canoe Races on Aug. 17 and the Cline Mann Paddleboard Race this August.

The ASICS Jr. Rainbow Girls 16 volleyball team received $1,000 to defray expenses to the U.S. Junior Nationals. A $500 grant went to Team Hawaii, a group of 11 bodysurfers who will attend the World Championships in California in August.

PUBLIC LINKS QUALIFYING: Local qualifying for the 72nd U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships will be held at four different golf courses next month.

The Oahu qualifying will be held at the Ewa Villages Golf Course on June 14, while the neighbor island qualifying at Hilo, Waiehu (Maui) and Waialua (Kauai) will be held June 21. Entry deadline is June 4.

The national championship is set for July 14-19 at the Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky.

CHALLENGE AT MANELE: Twenty-nine Aloha Section PGA pros representing 18 golf courses locally will compete for a $10,000 purse July 10-11 at the Challenge at Manele course on Lanai.

They also will be qualifying for six spots in the Western Region PGA Club Professional Championships in October.
