Kamehameha alumni seek
another meeting with trustees

Kamehameha Schools alumni will make another attempt to meet with all five Bishop Estate trustees this week after only two trustees showed up at a meeting last Saturday.

"There was no meeting," said Roy Benham, spokesman for Na Pua a Pauahi, a group of Kamehameha Schools alumni, parents and supporters worried about allegations of mismanagement.

"Those in attendance know that our committee walked out without calling the meeting to order because you could only produce two of the five trustees," the group wrote in a letter Tuesday to Chairman Richard Wong.

Trustees have not yet contacted the group about a new meeting date. In their letter, members asked that another meeting be scheduled no later than tomorrow with all five trustees.

"The issues we are discussing are too important and require everyone's undivided attention. We will expect nothing less," the group wrote.

2,000-visitor limit eyed
for Hanauma preserve

Shutting down Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve all day on Tuesdays and limiting the number of visitors to 2,000 at any time are included in rule changes proposed by the city Parks Department.

Another proposal would curb the unauthorized dropoff of tourists going to the bay.

A public hearing on these proposed changes, designed to preserve one of Oahu's most popular visitor attractions, is scheduled for 2 p.m. July 2 in the sixth-floor conference room at the Parks Department office.

In April, the city began charging nonresidents $3 to enter the lower level of the facility and motorists $1 to park in the upper lot.

The proposed rule changes require no approvals by the City Council, although park officials say Mayor Jeremy Harris will take public comment into consideration.

Land Use Commision will hold
another Molokai Ranch hearing

WAILUKU - -- The state Land Use Commission will hold another hearing about the development of campsites at Molokai Ranch to remedy a possible violation of the state Sunshine Law.

Molokai Ranch has filed a complaint with the attorney general's office alleging six commissioners violated the law by discussing the campsites dispute during a lunch in Kaunakakai, before making a decision in public May 7.

Commissioners at the contested-case hearing were Chairwoman Trudy Senda, M. Casey Jarman, Lloyd Kawakami, Merle Kelai, Joann Matson and Lawrence Ing.

The complaint alleges the commissioners "discussed and decided the result in the upcoming contested case and discussed the script to be followed in the hearing."

Senda, a Kauai attorney, declined to comment because the matter was in litigation.

A new hearing is tentatively scheduled for 9:30 a.m. July 17 at the Leiopapa A Kamehameha Building on Oahu.

Judge overturns ruling
in guard's bail hearing

Chief U.S. District Judge Alan Kay has overturned a magistrate's ruling and ordered a Halawa Correctional Facility guard charged with drug offenses to be held without bail.

Kay ruled Ben Sesepesera was a flight risk and a threat to public safety, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Muehleck said. Sesepesera will be tried July 22 for possession with intent to distribute two pounds of crystal methamphetamine.

Mehleck said there were eight firearms in the house where Sesepesera was staying, and although the weapons were not owned by Sesepesera, he had access to them while living in the house.

Kay overturned a magistrate's decision to place Sesepesera under 24-hour house arrest in the custody of his sister, Lisa Sesepesera, until trial.
