FRIDAY

"It Just Takes One": Go on a musical journey with the Kipapa Elementary School Performing Arts as they share stories and songs about our environment. At 7:30 p.m. May 30-31, Kipapa School Cafetorium. Cost: $3-$5. Tickets at 627-7007. Call 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

"The State Where I Live": Original paintings created by children ages 5-12 for the Mokichi Okada Association Museum of Art's painting contest will be on display through June 1, Kahala Mall, in front of Woolworths. SATURDAY

Something fishy: Aquatic biologists 6- to 10-years-old will build a living model of a stream, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Hawaii Nature Center. Cost: $7. Reservations required. Call 955-0100.

Archaeologists: Dirt-digging scientists are needed to uncover treasures and solve mysterious puzzles, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Borders, Ward Centre. Free. Call 955-0100.

CONTESTS

Coloring contest: Create an ocean theme drawing, turn it in to any Daiei store through June 14, and become eligible to win an Oscar Mayer Wagon and a Bishop Museum Family Membership pass (one grandprize winner per store). There also will be weekly winners and every keiki entering receives an Oscar Mayer Wiener whistle. Open to keiki 12 and under. Call 847-3511.

Spelling bee: Children in grades 4 through 8 (in school year 1997 to 1998) are welcomed to register for the Hawaiian Spelling Bee 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 27, Ward Warehouse Amphitheater. Winner will receive a computer for his or her class and a class party. Limited to 20 participants. Registration forms available at 545-1771 (Oahu) or 1-800-852-7690 (outer islands).

SPECIAL

"Grinds For the Mind": 1997 summer reading program for teens entering Grade 7 through 12. Teens can receive weekly incentives for books read from June 8 through July 26. Register at a public library and fill out reading logs. Statewide end of program prizes include Pearlridge Shopping Spree drawings of $1,000, $500 and $250 provided by Pizza Hut. Neighbor island winners will be flown in.

Children's theater: Act One has summer programs with games, theater techniques, comedy routines, acting, vocal training and dancing. Classes at Kailua Intermediate School and Le Jardin Academy. Call 261-0457.

Learn to swim: Children ages 4 through 14 can learn how to swim in American Red Cross' annual program. The free program will be held from 8:45 to 10 a.m. Saturdays, through July 26, Ala Moana Beach Park, lifeguard stand 1E, next to the Magic Island parking lot. Call 739-8108.
