Did you know that Mayor Frank Fasi once appeared in an episode of "Hawaii Five-0?" Or that Helen Hayes -- the adoptive mother of "Five-0" co-star James MacArthur -- played her son's eccentric aunt in "Retire in Hawaii-Forever?"

Karen Rhodes' 333-page hardcover book -- "Booking 'Hawaii Five-0': An Episode Guide and Critical History of the 1968-80 Television Detective Series" -- is the most detailed history of the show.

Booking "Hawaii Five-0": An Episode Guide and Critical History of the 1968-80 Television Detective Series: By Karen Rhodes, 333 pages, McFarland & Company, Inc., $45

The book covers the show's history; provides complete casts and credits for all the regulars for each season; and has an episode guide that gives the title, original air date, director, producer, guest stars, a detailed synopsis of each show, behind-the-scene developments, and anecdotes. There are also appendices that list episodes in order of filming and a glossary of Hawaiian words and phrases used in the series.

There's an interesting chart listing the percentage of bad guys and victims according to ethnicity. According to Rhodes, 76 percent of the "villains" were Caucasian which made up 33 percent of Hawaii's population in 1980; 5 percent of the bad guys were Hawaiian and Chinese, 12 and 6 percent of the population, respectively; and 4 percent were Japanese, 25 percent of Hawaii's population.

About that Fasi cameo: According to Rhodes, Fasi got a role in "The Two-Face Corpse" after being caught in traffic on Ala Wai Blvd because the production was filming there. Fasi demanded that the director shut the production down.

Unaware that Fasi was mayor the director told him to get lost or an off-duty policeman would physically remove him. When the director learned it was Mayor Fasi, he gave him a bit part in which he had to speak lines.

"Booking 'Hawaii Five-0' " is not yet available in Hawaii but can be ordered by sending $45 plus $3 shipping and handling to McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers, Box 611, Jefferson, North Carolina 28640, or by calling 1-(800)-253-2187.
