I have an unlisted telephone number and therefore do not have it printed on my checks. Under the state Constitution, isn't this number considered private and thus protected? Some retailers don't make an issue of getting a number. Others insist it is required; otherwise the "check verifying company won't accept it." I believe those insisting on a number are incorrect. If I am correct, where can I file a complaint? Merchant isn't entitled
to your phone numberThere is no state law that governs whether a consumer has to disclose any personal information in a transaction with a merchant, said Jo Ann Uchida, executive director of the state Office of Consumer Protection.
"It varies from merchant to merchant and check policy to check policy on what information they require.
"So it's the consumer's choice as to whether he or she wants to do business with that merchant" and under what terms, she said.
It's your right to demand an explanation of why it's important to give information, Uchida said.
