state golf champsPunahou's Anna Umemura won her second girl's title with a 153, 13 strokes better than teammate Kathy Cho.
The 5-foot-3, 135-pound Asao, who finished 24th last year and 22nd in 1995, had a two-round total of 145. Kauai High's Jamie Matsumura was second at 150 and 1996 champion Parker McLachlin of Punahou third at 151.
"He's small but he has really good wrists and he can hit it long," said HBA coach John Hom.
Punahou won its third straight state team title with a 620 score. Waiakea was four strokes behind.
"After I made my last putt, Parker came over and congratulated me," said Asao, who was in the same group as McLachlin. They were tied after the front nine.
"I was so pressured out and nervous until we made the turn and I saw I was tied with Parker," said Asao, who finished fourth in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships. "That kind of settled me down."
Asao took the lead on hole 11 with a par 4 while McLachlin hit a water hazard and bogeyed.
McLachlin battled back to tie with a birdie on hole 13 while Asao shot par 5.
On 14, Asao made par 3 while McLachlin bogeyed again.
Asao had yet another birdie on 15 to take a two-stroke lead over McLachlin, who made par.
The critical hole was 16 when McLachlin double-bogeyed and Asao took a commanding four-stroke lead with par 4.
