Out in Santa Clara, Calif., Filipino culture is alive and dancing thanks to Noel Tamayo, an engineer in California's semiconductor industry and devoted fan of Filipino dance. Filipino culture
dancing on NetSince 1989 he has been performing in or teaching dance with the Barkada club of Santa Clara University.
Now he has a page on the Web at http://pw1.netcom.com/~ntamayo/folkdance.html.
The site is complete with musical sounds bites, including original Filipino dance music composed by Tamayo.
As schoolchildren practice the Tinikling, they can learn the dance's roots and hear some of the music from the site. Tamayo says he is getting e-mail from as far away as Norway and Japan, as students researching Filipino dances find his page.
The calendar section even lists an international collection of dance concerts for this summer.
"Home on the Web" is a weekly Friday feature of the Star-Bulletin.
