Some breakers
in the radio waves

THINGS can get pretty volatile in the radio and TV business in Hawaii. Just three weeks ago Patterson Broadcasting sold its seven isle radio stations (including KSSK) to Capstar Broadcasting. Now comes word that an L.A. group is purchasing two Honolulu AM'ers, KGU and KHNR. That should come as good news to KGU's sports guy Bobby Curran and KHNR's news anchor Minna Sugimoto who've been merging closer together even before the sales rumors ... Just last week an item here mentioned Ron Jacobs was back in town for a drag racing reunion at Kahuku. I mentioned that his old Poi Boy buddy Tom Moffatt had just gone on the air on 107.9, the oldies station, but that Jacobs had no plans to join him since he was involved in radio in L.A. That just may have been premature. Word is if the money is right, the lure of the islands may be too great for Jacobs to pass up. Just imagine if the two Golden Oldies could team up again, decades after their first meeting ...

MEANWHILE, let us turn our attention to TV Finks. That would be John Fink, G.M. of KHNL, which last night aired the final season episode of "Something So Right." While the show was airing there was something so wrong with Fink. Seems he blew out his kneecap (Clinton style) playing soccer, of all things, but should be back at his desk in the next day or so. This latest injury came just after the doctor gave him the OK to take up soccer again after separating his shoulder during a game three months ago. Not that he's considering it, but Fink was advised by his doctor not to play again for at least six months. I hope Fink was watching the early morning news yesterday when anchorwoman Lee Cataluna was discussing with her weatherman-sidekick Guy Hagi the subject of golf attire. "I know the difference between pants and knickers," Cataluna said, "and I can't wear either." She seemed blissfully unaware that "knickers" in England and elsewhere refers to underwear, or her face might have got as red as Payne Stewart's golfing knickers ...

Hi there, Fly Boy!

NEXT week is Military Appreciation Week in Hawaii, and the Chamber of Commerce is kicking it off Monday at the state Capitol rotunda. There our newly wedded Gov. Ben Cayetano will present a proclamation to Adm. Joseph Prueher, top military man in the Pacific. And this being the 50th anniversary of the Air Force, Gen. John Lorber, USAF, will be the keynote speaker at the May 15 luncheon at the Ilikai. He leads the largest unified Air Force operation, across over half the earth's surface. KHET's Don Robbs will emcee. Concluding the week's ceremonies, the Hawaii Combined Military Band Concert will be at the Hawaii Theatre May 17 with Linda Coble emceeing. There should be more ribbons on parade than at the Olympic games ...

YOU think hair stylist Paul Brown isn't thrilled about his move to Ward Centre. The walk-in traffic alone made the move worthwhile, reports Brown. It's gone from 60 a month to over 460. His new Salon & Day Spa gave out complimentary hair, makeup and skin consultations last weekend, and will repeat the process this week as part of the Centre's Mother's Day promotion ... Speaking of which, there'll be a big Mother's Day tribute Sunday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Tapa Ballroom. Danny Kaleikini hosts "The Wonderful World of Aloha" with entertainment by the Honolulu Boy Choir, Chinky Mahoe's Na Keiki O Kawaili'ula, Brother Noland, Miss Hawaii Melissa Ann Short and Dis Guys. Call 596-SING.

Lolly-palooza

WHILE the Diamond Head Theatre wasn't able to bring in Susan Stroman to recreate her Tony Award-winning choreography for "Crazy for You," which opens May 15, it did the next best thing. Localite Lolly Totero, a veteran of the European and Canadian tours of the Gershwin musical, has been teaching the original choreography to the local cast for their run, which goes until June 1. Opening night is a gala benefit catered by Russell Siu of 3660 on the Rise and Richard Field of R. Field Wine Co....
