WAC tourney hopes
fading fast for Rainbows

PROVO, Utah -- The University of Hawaii baseball team is dangling off the edge of the postseason cliff after losing to Brigham Young Saturday morning, 8-7.

A win by San Diego State or Texas Christian University this weekend will eliminate Hawaii from the Western Athletic Conference tournament.

After dropping Friday's second game of the series, 16-14, UH head coach Les Murakami said Hawaii must win Saturday to stay alive. But it wasn't meant to be.

Top BYU pitcher Jeff Stone raised his record to 11-0 in Saturday's game by limiting Hawaii to five runs at offense-friendly Cougar Field. He didn't give up any runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, allowing the Cougars to rally from a 5-3 deficit to the eventual victory. UH senior pitcher Robby Robinson was tagged with the loss in relief of Dusty Bergman. He is now 3-9 for the season.

The Rainbows return home to finish their season against rival San Diego State. The Aztecs have a commanding four-game advantage over the Rainbows for the sixth and final spot in the WAC tourney. San Diego State needs only one win over lowly New Mexico to dash Hawaii's late-season run.

Since sweeping Nevada-Las Vegas in early April, Hawaii has gone 10-6. The Rainbows almost rallied for a win yesterday, only to come up short like today.
