Drive on for Foodbank

Saturday is the eighth annual statewide Food Drive Day to raise donations for the Hawaii Foodbank. Drop-off sites are at Restaurant Row, Oahu fire stations, Pearl City Shopping Center, Mililani Shopping Center, Koko Marina Center, Windward City Shopping Center and military locations. Receiving time is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at all locations.

Restaurant Row is the main site with entertainment, live television and radio coverage, and volunteers to collect donations of canned goods and groceries.

The Hawaii Foodbank is a nonprofit organization that salvages groceries from the food industry and distributes these items to charities feeding those in need. Last year, the Foodbank distributed more than 4.6 million pounds of food.

Check the oil: Chef/restaurateur Jean-Marie Josselin hosts a free tasting of oils, including grapeseed, hazelnut, macadamia, pumpkin-seed and various olive oils, 3 to 4 p.m. tomorrow, A Pacific Cafe Ward Centre. Reservations required at 593-0035.

Prince protege: John Sado, a Hawaii Prince Hotel chef and A Pacific Cafe saucier, holds a demonstration/sampling, 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Lyon Arboretum; $22. Call 988-7378 to register.

Moon shine: Kahala Moon chef/owner Kelvin Ro holds a demonstration/sampling of his signature Portobello Mushroom with Balsamic Roasted Garlic Jus, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, J.C. Penney Ala Moana, fourth-floor housewares department; free. Call 946-8068 for more information.

Soltner de Lutece: World-renowned chef Andre Soltner hosts a demonstration/four-course dinner with wines of France, Sicily and California, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Hawaii Prince Hotel; $65. Call 944-4494 for reservations.

Mandarin Passover: Friday is the reservation/payment deadline for a Passover Seder featuring chicken, gefilte fish, matzo ball soup and vegetarian plate, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Kahala Mandarin Hotel. Temple Emanu-El nonmember prices are $75 for adults, $38 for children under 10. Call 531-1457.

Bit of Burgundy: Alan Jahns of JMD Beverages hosts an "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Burgundy" wine lecture/sampling with light pupu, 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, JMD Educational Center in Halawa valley; $45. Call 956-8400 to register or for more information.

For salad lovers: Enter the $5,000 Fetzer Vineyards Great Salad Toss recipe contest. The idea is that wines go well with main-course salads.

Last year's winner was a chicken salad mixed with trendy ingredients garnished with pickled ginger.
