Playin' those chamber blues

Blues harp player Corky Siegel and the West End String Quartet perform a mesmerizing mix of chamber blues from 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Siegel is the only blues musician to have recorded for the prestigious classical label Deutsche Grammophon. He has written and performed with Arthur Fiedler, the San Francisco and Grant Park symphonies and the National Symphony Orchestra at Kennedy Center.

Angling time

Nu'uanu Reservoir No. 4 will be open on weekends to fishers, beginning May 31, in two four-hour blocks every Saturday and Sunday. Fishers must have both state game fishing licenses and an Entry Fishing Card for the date and time assigned.

Application deadline for the Entry Fishing Card is 4 p.m.

May 2. Pick up forms at the Department of Land and Natural Resources one-stop shop at 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 131, and from license agents. A drawing will assign each requestee's time and date. Times run 7 to 11 a.m. and noon to 4 p.m. each day.

The bag limit is two channel catfish per licensed angler. Warm clothes and raincoats are recommended.

Kapono concert free

Hawaii musician Henry Kapono will perform a free concert to promote his new CD "Home in the Islands" at 7:30 p.m. April 18 at the Waikiki Shell.

Kapono first became known as one-half of Cecilio and Kapono in the 1970s and has since become a prolific songwriter.

This is thought to be the first free concert by a "major artist" at the Shell and all 8,000 tickets are general admission, to be awarded in weekly drawings courtesy of Hawaii Shell gasoline dealers. Entry blanks are available at participating Shell stations on Oahu.

Marley boys 'Jam Down'

Damien "Jr. Gong" and Julian Marley, sons of reggae legend Bob Marley, plus Wailing Soul, Deforce and Hawaii's Maacho, will perform at the "One Love Reggae Jam Down" at 5 p.m. April 26 at the Waikiki Shell.

Damien Marley is the youngest son of Bob Marley and recently recorded the album "Mr. Marley." Julian Marley grew up in England and his first U.S. album was "Lion in the Morning."

Admission is $22.50 and $20.50. Information: 627-0128.

Caz welcome May

The Brothers Cazimero will perform in the 20th Annual May Day Concert at the Waikiki Shell at 7:30 p.m. May 1.

Tickets go on sale April 16 and are $22.50 for reserved seating and $16 general admission.

Moloka'i tradition

The annual Moloka'i Ka Hula Piko -- a "celebration of the birth of hula on Molokai" -- takes place 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 17 at Papohaku Beach Park at Kaluakoi. The theme is "He Paepae Pohaku, He Kumu O Molokai -- The Foundation of Molokai Is Like A Stone Platform."

The free event will feature hula performances and demonstrations, Hawaiian crafts, Hawaiian foods and talks. Lectures on Moloka'i history and storytelling will be presented by kumu hula John Kaimikaua at 7 p.m. May 13 to 15 in the Hoaloha Room at the Kaluakoi Hotel and Golf Club.

Find the murderer

Wealthy local importer-exporter Maximillian Rich is dead. And that's not funny even though Rich is played by Star-Bulletin humor columnist Charlie Memminger. Rich was killed at the Hawaii Theatre and Honolulu Police Department assistant chief Keith Pocock, FBI investigators and Hong Kong detectives are trying to solve the case .

The suspects are Tina Shelton, Glenn Cannon, Matthew Pedersen, Devon Guard, Beth Ann Kozlovich, Louis Xigogianis, Mark Lloyd, Cassandra Harrell, Veronica Kelly, Mike Humelrickhouse, Don Nahaku, Laurence Paxton, Jeff Kurtzman, Richard Pellett, and Antoni Luke. The investigators need your help.

It's all part of the first anniversary benefit of the re-opening of the Hawaii Theatre, 6 p.m. May 3.

The gala includes cocktails and dinner. There's also an auction of "Rich's" possessions, including paintings by Hiroshi Tagami and Pegge Hopper, unused gift certificates and plane tickets.

KHNL news anchors Vince Gerasole and Heidi Umbhau will emcee. Tickets are $150 for individuals; up to $10,000 for "Patron Boxes" for 10. For reservations call 528-5535 by April 18.
