Juergen Malbeck, Hawaii Pacific University's 7-foot-1 center, has been named the 1996-97 NAIA Player of the Year.

"It's an amazing way for me to end my career at Hawaii Pacific," said Malbeck,.

Malbeck, from Noerdlingen, Germany, set a school record for best field goal percentage by hitting 220 of 318 shots for 69 percent.

Malbeck will travel to the Portsmouth Invitational in Virginia where he will compete as one of the top 64 seniors in the country.

A strong performance in Portsmouth could gain him an invitation to the Desert Classic in Phoenix, Arizona (April 13-16) and the Chicago Camp (June 2-6), events leading up to the NBA draft (June 25).

"My goal is to play in the NBA -- it's something I've dreamed of for a long time," said Malbeck.

HPU junior guard Llewellyn Smalley was named to the second team and senior guard Steve Richey was an honorable-mention pick.
