Hawaii turns back
Penn State in four games

Energized by a vocal crowd that sat through nearly six hours of marathon volleyball, No. 3 Hawaii finally finished off fifth-ranked Penn State, 15-6, 15-12, 5-15, 15-10.

The Rainbows needed 2 hours and 27 minutes to run their record to 2-0 in the Outrigger Hotels Invitational. The tournament title is theirs to win or share; Hawaii can earn it outright for the second year in a row by beating No. 2 UCLA in Saturday night's soldout 9 p.m. finale.

The Bruins kept alive their hopes of a piece of the championship by subduing Laval of Canada, 15-6, 14-16, 15-7, 13-15, 15-10. The overmatched Le Rouge et Or became the hanai darlings of the crowd with their spirited play against UCLA, earning a standing ovation after their 2 hour, 33-minute defeat.

Iolani's Taamu says
he's going to Colorado

Ed Taamu, who was named the 1996 Star-Bulletin all-state defensive player of the year, said last night he has verbally committed to the University of Colorado.

The 6-foot-2, 300-pound defensive tackle, who visited the Colorado campus last weekend, said his decision should relieve the stress that's been placed upon his family during the recruiting season.

"They weren't used to all the phone calls because they've never been through this before," he said.

"Colorado is a great school that gets a lot of exposure, playing in the Big 12. I'm happy with my choice."

Taamu also was recruited by Utah State, Wasington State, Utah, and Hawaii

"They said that if I come in during summer practice and I'm in the condition they want me to be in, and I have the strength they want me to have, then they'll try to play me right away." Taamu said.

But there is a caveat in the Colorado scholarship offer.

Taamu said he must prove to the school in the next two weeks that he can raise his grade point average to a satisfactory level before he can sign a letter of intent.

He said that if he can not make the required improvement, he will turn to the University of Utah as a Prop 48 entry.

Whereas the Western Athletic Conference still permits Prop 48s, the Big 12 does not.
