Eddie Kamae, Lt. Gov Maize Hirono

Football season
ain’t over yet

AND then there was one! Football has oh, so slowly, kicked along from the earliest of exhibition games in, what, July? And now that the Hula Bowl has come and gone, there remains but one more contest until people can put aside all thoughts of gridiron and turn to Roundball. Quite a number of Hula Bowl players have been turning up around town, most of them unknowns until and unless they make it in the pros. But spotted at Matteo's were former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator George Perles (with four Super Bowl rings stashed somewhere) and at another table, ESPN's Chris Fowler and his crew. Also on hand were Hula Bowl honchos Marsha and Lenny Klompus ... And if you're a believer in the Sports Illustrated cover jinx, be aware that the Green Bay Packers are on the cover of today's edition. But one more cover will be on the stands before game time, so don't bet the farm on the Patriots just yet ...

AND while many private parties will be gearing up to watch the Super Bowl Sunday and sports bars all over town will be trying to outdo each other, the Ilikai is opening up the Pacific Ballroom for the event and will have a huge 14-foot TV screen ...

THE Bishop Museum is holding a special opening and blessing of "Na Mea Makamae: Treasures of Hawai'i" at the Museum's Castle Memorial building, and not the least of the treasures on display will be "Living Treasure" Eddie Kamae, who'll be making a rare performance. He's become so involved in filmmaking that it's rare he takes up that ukulele of his ... The late Fred Dailey, who was "Mr. Polo" in Hawaii, is being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Museum of Polo in Florida next month ... A guy who remains anonymous has been "corresponding" via e-mail with Asia Carrera and went to see her at an appearance last week in Pearl City. Now he's certain someone else is answering her messages because while she may turn on an audience, he says, "I don't think she could turn on her computer." ...

Pot possession?

NOW that the Cannabis Club has re-opened in San Francisco and people with a doctor's note can get marijuana for "medical purposes," pot is making something of a comeback in the Bay Area. But in Hawaii? At the State Legislature yet? Seems Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono was a bit hit on opening day at the legislature with both House and Senate members. She enlisted the help of the Waimanalo Health Center kids - ages 7 to 17 - and together they painted some 75 clay pots in which she put a bouquet of candy "flowers," and now her phone's ringing off the hook with messages of thanks. And no, she's not likely to be busted for "pot possession." ...

AT the top of many a New Year's resolution is a vow to diet and lose some weight. At least two females I can think of have eschewed any thoughts of dieting this year, however. That would be Mari and Vaigai, two Honolulu Zoo elephants who are due for their annual weigh-in on Friday. Last year, the two topped the scales at 10,620 and a paltry 6,680, respectively. Whether they've lost or gained weight, and the smart money is on a gain, the two will celebrate with a special healthy cake made up of 25 pounds of bananas, 50 pounds of carrots, 20 pounds of apples, a pound of hau leaves and more. So eat up girls ...

Naval maneuvers

THE Honolulu Council of the Navy League of the U.S. has long been the largest. Just before Mike Lilly turned over the presidency to Tim Guard this month, it surpassed 5,000 members. Appropriate, too, since the Navy has long played such a vital role in Hawaii - and it was, after all, instrumental in my ever seeing the islands ... Incidentally, there's an effort underway to get the new causeway to Ford Island named for Adm. Bernard Clarey, who died here last year. He was a World War II sub skipper, who commanded the U.S. Pacific Fleet and was long active in Navy and community affairs after retiring here. It would be a fitting tribute ...
