Accomplished yet humble

Joshua Lieberman does not fit a typical profile of an influential and accomplished high school senior. People who know him use words such as "humble" and "unassuming" to describe him.

"He's a quiet leader," said Lynne Tsuda, a senior dean at Punahou. "If you want something done, Josh will snap to it, but then you really have to dig to find his name attached to it.

"He's a great kid, but you don't hear his name a lot because he keeps quiet about himself."

Lieberman served as a contributing editor of one of Punahou's all-student-run periodicals, "Querencia." He also took part in founding a web page design company, Redchile Web Designs.

Admitted under the early-decision program at Colby College in Maine, Lieberman is excited about his upcoming freshman year away from home. "I'm looking forward to the independence," said Lieberman. "I visited Colby with my family and it just clicked with me."

Lieberman said both Punahou and Colby have a family-oriented feel. "At Punahou, the teachers are your friends," he said.

Arnold and Diane Lieberman are happy about Joshua's collegiate plans. "I want him to get a good education and really enjoy his first year in college," Arnold Lieberman said.

Joshua said teaching may be a career goal, but added, "I'm open to other ideas at this point."
