OPENING

Contemporary Museum, 2411 Makiki Heights Drive, 526-0232. “Heavenly Bodies,” paintings by Elsa Flores, opens in the Contemporary Cafe on Tuesday. Show continues through March 23.

Gallery Iolani, Windward Community College, 45-720 Kea‘ahala Road, 235-7346. “Humanity Above Nation,” reflecting on the influences of two young men in improving relations between Japan and the United States, opens Tuesday. The Kenny Endo Taiko Drum Ensemble, Joseph Muratsuchi of the Joseph Heco Society and Minoru Shinoda, professor emeritus of history, will be at the reception 4 to 7 p.m. Jan. 17. Show continues through Jan. 31.

Honolulu Hale, 530 S. King St., 527-5666. Works by the Association of Hawaii Artists, on view Monday though 30.

Koa Gallery, Kapiolani Community College, 4303 Diamond Head Road, 734-9375. Paintings by Linda Fong, with opening reception 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday. If the faculty go on strike, the reception will be moved to Jan. 29. Show continues through Jan. 29.

The Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center, 999 Bishop St. “Artists/Hawaii,” works by 22 artists featured in the book of the same title, on view through Feb. 19. Artists include Allyn Bromley, Alan Leitner, Rick Mills, Franco Salmoiraghi, Tadashi Sato, Laura Smith, Suzanne Wolfe and Doug Young.

Contemporary Museum’s Honolulu Advertiser Gallery, 605 Kapiolani Blvd., 525-8066. “ASoWbSAoNPT,” works by Hawaii artists, on view through Wednesday. Artists include Dan Calhoune, Kimberly Chai, Don Ed Hardy, Keiko Hatano, Dean Sakamoto, Pia Stern and Michael Takemoto.

Davies Pacific Center, 841 Bishop St. Landscape drawings by Kit Cameron, on view through Jan. 30. Cameron explores the intersection between the ordinary and the sacred realm in drawings with crayon on black paper.

East Hawaii Cultural Center Gallery, 141 Kalakaua St., Hilo, Big Island, 808-961-5711. “Women’s Beauty/Women’s Fate: Myths & Metaphors,” mixed media work and installations by Phan Nguyen Barker, on view in January. The Center Stage Gallery features the traveling exhibition “Vietnam: Awakening the Dragon.”

Hawaii Pacific University Art Gallery, 45-045 Kamehameha Highway, Kaneohe, 233-3167. “New Printmakers,” works by Sheri Frye, Dan Sailer, Donna Broder, Helene Sroat, Mira Alden and Rob Noland, on view through Friday.

Heart of Lanai Art Gallery, Lanai City, 808-565-6678. “Inspired by Lanai,” oils by Macario Pascual and watercolors by Denise Hennig, on view in January.

Honolulu Academy of Arts, 900 S. Beretania St., 532-8700. More than 70 pieces of Japanese lacquer art from a private collection, some with inlaid and carved designs, and some dating from the 16th century, on view through June 29. Free admission on the first Wednesday of each month.

“Modern Design, 1920-1960” reflects the century’s major changes, through March 16. Silver, glass and ceramics highlight changes in the arts of the United States, Russia and Europe.

“Artists of Hawaii,” an annual exhibition of resident artists’ works, on view through Jan. 19. The juror, Roy Slade from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, selected 73 works by 49 artists, among them Ginger Bowen, Mark Donham, Kip Krieger and Mika McCann.

New works by Shigeru Miyamoto, the fourth recipient of the Catherine E.B. Cox Award for excellence in visual arts, will be on view through Jan. 19. Miyamoto, an artist and teacher, is known for large-scale, abstract ceramic sculptures and effigy vessels.

Watercolors on Hawaii subjects by Millard Sheets, on view through Jan. 12. The West Coast

artist was director of art at Scripps College, Claremont Graduate School and Otis Art Institute; served on FDR’s Public Works of Art program; and has completed several commissions for Hawaii art.

Queen Emma Gallery, Queen’s Medical Center, 1301 Punchbowl St., 547-4397. “Ho‘ohali‘a: Treasured Memories,” paintings, ceramics and mixed media by Hinano and Ke‘alaonaonapuahinano, on view through Feb. 9. Latest in the “Homage to Manamana” series, started in 1987 as a tribute to the medical center’s founders, Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV.

Pottery classes: The City & County Parks & Recreation Department has registration Wednesday and Jan. 16 and 17 for 10 weeks of classes. Tuition $15. Call Paula at 395-3096.

Studio classes: The Academy Art Center has basic drawing, printmaking, ceramics, weaving, jewelry and other arts for adults in 14-week classes, beginning Jan. 21. Call 532-8741.

Classes for children meet on Saturday mornings or afternoons, Feb. 1 through April 19. Tuition is $100.

Funding for folk arts: Applications for the 1997 Folk Arts Apprenticeships will be accepted through Jan. 31. The program, aimed at preserving traditional cultural art forms, supports one-to-one training between a master artist and an experienced apprentice with awards of up to $4,000. The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts approved 18 apprenticeship teams for 1996, in such arts as Hawaiian fishnet making, ki ho‘alu, Cantonese opera and Laotian wood carving.

Hui No‘eau Juried Member’s Show: Artists in Maui county may submit two works on Saturday for the gallery show. Artwork must have been produced without supervision in the past two years and must not have been exhibited previously on Maui. Alan M. Leitner will be the juror. Entry fee $10 per piece. Folio 94: Visual artists wanted to collaborate on a limited edition quarterly. Submission deadline is Wednesday. Call Maggie at 735-9659.

Works on Paper: National exhibit will accept slides of work in any media on paper, including photography, through Feb. 1. New York City art critic Jerry Saltz will be the juror.

National Painting Show: Artists may enter two works in any permanent painting medium through Jan. 31. The show is open to Americans 18 and older; work must be original and not done under instruction.
