Person hopes to build bigger market

Hap Person plans to continue diversifying Honolulu Wood Treating Co. when he takes over as president on on Jan. 1.

"We're stronger now with larger markets in wholesale building products," he said.

Person replaces Tad Ogi, who is retiring after more than 40 years.

In 1988, Person joined the company as vice president of sales and marketing specifically to expand products beyond wood treating. He was promoted to executive vice president in 1994.

A Hawaii resident for about 20 years, Person worked for nearly eight years as a sales representative for Aloha State Sales.

Honolulu Wood Treating started in 1956. Ogi was one of the first employees hired by then-owner Clint Hallsted.

Ogi was also one of the partners who purchased the company in 1984 from the Koppers Company, bringing the ownership back to Hawaii.
