Take some notes before
informing on neighbors

Q: My in-laws live in a relatively middle-class, normal, nice neighborhood, with a lot of retirees. They suspect one house in the block is involved in drug dealing. They're concerned in terms of their own safety, as well as with the health of the neighborhood. Who would be appropriate to talk to and develop strategy to keep the neighborhood healthy?

The number to call is 529-3007, which is the complaint section of the Honolulu Police Department's narcotic/vice division.

But before you call, Sgt. Jerry Inouye, of HPD's informational resources section, advises you to do this: Keep some kind of a log, with date and times, of suspected illicit activity at the address.

That includes getting descriptions and license numbers of cars coming and going. Many times, the cars may be stolen or the plates may be faked, Inouye said.

Also, try to get a description of the people you see and their activities, i.e., do they go into the house just for a couple of minutes, then leave? If possible, see if neighbors you know have also noticed suspicious activity.
