cooking’s unsung heroes

Their covers aren't fancy. Their pages are more likely to be filled with text than glossy photos. But taken as a whole, community cookbooks create a more complete picture of the way America eats than Betty Crocker or Fannie Farmer could on their own.

Seven years ago the McIlhenny Company - the very same company that churns out Tabasco - started the Tabasco Community Cookbook Awards to honor the unsung heroes of American culinary preservation, and acknowledge the quirks of cookery that make each region so special.

The 1996 award winners will be announced in January but the search begins soon for the 1997 winner, with entries due Oct. 1, 1997.

Entries will be judged on layout and design, title, theme, storyline, reflection of regional culinary traditions, recipe content, and the organization's fund-raising efforts.

There will be three national winners, six regional winners, a selection of special merit winners and any book selling 100,000 or more copies will be considered for the Walter S. McIlhenny Hall of Fame.

For information, write: Tabasco Community Cookbook Awards, c/o Hunter MacKenzie, Inc., 41 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10010-2202. Or call 212-679-6600.
