Disabled pair sue city
over sidewalk access

Two severely disabled men have filed suit in federal court against the city for failure to make streets and sidewalks accessible to the impaired, their attorneys say.

"It's a matter of safety to me," said Jim McConnell, one of the plaintiffs.

The suit alleges that on Marin Street in downtown Honolulu there is no curb ramp and the sidewalk is blocked by parking meters.

The intersection of King and Maunakea Streets is cited as another example.

The suit seeks an order requiring the city to develop a plan to make sidewalks accessible.

Nimitz Highway/Ala Moana Boulevard: Keehi Interchange to Kalakaua Ave.

Kamehameha Highway/Moanalua Freeway: Waiawa Interchange to Middle Street.

Vineyard Boulevard: Palama Street to Punchbowl Street.

Pali Highway: Vineyard Boulevard to Castle Junction.

Likelike Highway: King Street to Kahekili Highway.

Drunken driver checkpoints

Honolulu police plan to set up drunken driver checkpoints during the upcoming holiday season, so drivers beware.

Roadblocks are to be set up each weekend during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years holidays at unannounced locations, beginning Friday.

Woman suspected in shootings

Charges are being sought against a 27-year-old woman who surrendered to police early yesterday in connection with two shootings in Village Park over the weekend.

The woman, of Kupuohi Street, was booked for suspicion of attempted murder at 7 last night.

On Saturday, police arrested a 19-year-old man and seized a .25-caliber automatic from him after shots were fired at a Kupuna Loop home where a party was in full swing.

Earlier that night, a 19-year-old man was wounded in the right forearm by one of two men who drove past the home in a white Toyota. Another man, 25, sustained a cut to his head during a scuffle with another occupant of the car.

Shots were also fired at the same home at 94-529 Kupuna Lp. around 3 a.m. Monday. No one was injured.

Off-duty fireman saves woman

An off-duty Honolulu fireman ran into a burning building and rescued an elderly woman yesterday before the Aina Haina home was demolished in the late afternoon blaze.

The cause of the fire at 5250 Oio Drive is under investigation.

Wailupe engine company Capt. Nelson Shirai said firefighter John Kino, who lives nearby, entered the house and brought the resident out. She was not injured.

Shirai said the fire apparently started in a rear bedroom. Damage was estimated at $300,000 to the building and $50,000 to the contents.
