SUDDEN thought: In the wake of Rick Chapman's abrupt resignation to return to the mainland, the third such senior marketing exec in the past year, the convention folks at HVB seem to be losing more people than they're bringing in. There have been some top travel and tourism related execs in town of late, headed by Masakuni Osano, CEO of Kokusai Kogyo Co., owners of the Sheraton hotels in Hawaii. Also in for the reopening of the Sheraton Maui was Richard Hartman, president of Sheraton for North America. He also got together with Hertz' local superstar Billy Williams, who's godfather to Hartman's son, Nicholas. As for Williams, he needed all his superstar moves because also visiting was Joseph Nothwang, G.M. of Hertz Rent-a-Car for North America. It was a bit of a homecoming for Nothwang, who used to be stationed here as Hertz area manager before moving up in the company ... Tourism execs play tourists
THERE was also a real live count in town. Diethard, Graf (Count) von Koenigsmarck and his wife overnighted on Oahu to visit his Kailua family before returning to Maui for the flight back to their Bavarian home. The count, who is Hawaiian-German, and whose mother was born in Kekaha, Kauai, is a descendant of the Isenberg family. Incidentally, because of his mixed parentage, the count was obliged during the Nazi regime to carry ID proving he was of Aryan stock. He obtained the identification thanks to the efforts of his Hawaii-based aunt, the Baroness Helen zur Helle ...
REP. Barbara Marumoto gave out refrigerator magnets during her recent successful run for office. She won her race in the 17th District, so apparently not all voters suffered the same fate she did. Rep. Marumoto put a magnet of her own in her wallet and before she could get it home and on her fridge, it destroyed all the info on a credit card. Zap. Pau ...
THE largest group giving thanks again this year at Thanksgiving will surely be the 2,000 people who take advantage of the free feed put on by the Salvation Army at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. But for 20 fortunate seniors of Pohulani, they'll be giving thanks in unfamiliar territory. These folks will be the guests of Planet Hollywood in Waikiki, in what the Planeteers promise is just the first of more to come ...Bob Dye was giving thanks at the reception celebrating the publication of "Hawaii Chronicles," a series of historical stories he selected from the pages of Honolulu Magazine over the years. As he was thanking those who came, I counted the number of times he used the term "very very" in his brief remarks. Seven! That's a very very lot, I told him ... Giving thanks
THIS coming Thanksgiving weekend will see loads of rodeo-goers circling their wagons (Volks and otherwise) at Molokai Ranch's rodeo area. It's the third annual Molokai Ranch Professional Rodeo, where nationally known rodeo clown Butch Lehmkuhler will help cowboys from across the state kick up some dust, paniolo style. The action gets underway at 6 p.m. both Friday and Saturday ...There'll be real old-time Hawaiian music in a special Thanksgiving show at International Marketplace tomorrow when Moana Chang takes the food court stage from 5 to 8 p.m. Moana is not only the mom of two members of Kanilau, but of seven other talented performers on the mainland as well, and now has her own solo album, "He Leo O Moana." ...
YOU'D think with the title of Miss Hawaii under your belt, you'd be satisfied with the way you look, but not necessarily. When the current title holder, Melissa Short, heard that celebrity makeup artist Billy B. was in town to promote a new line of cosmetics from Paris, she signed up to get a make over at the new Blush store in Kahala Mall. Mr. B. works with all the major fashion mags: Elle, Glamour, Vogue, Mirabella, etc. And his client list is a who's who of celebrity: Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Julia Roberts and many more. Including now, Miss Hawaii ... Hey, make me over
