UH men start learning about
life without Yuval

The birth of University of Hawaii men's volleyball mania begins its postpartum stage tomorrow night when the Rainbows reveal what life without All-American Yuval Katz will be like.

In what surely is a first for a collegiate sport other than basketball, the Rainbows offer a preseason look at the gains and remains of the team that finished second at the NCAA championship last May. The Green-White intrasquad scrimmage begins at 7 p.m., but the prematch contests may prove equally entertaining.

There will be a new twist on the serve-for-a-prize contest, according to assistant coach Tino Reyes. The real winner will be the summer school program fund for UH athletes, the beneficiary of the $5 admission fee.

Beside Katz, who turned professional, and All-American setter Erik Pichel and Troy Hotz, who both graduated, the Rainbows will be missing three familiar faces from the team that went 27-3 last season. Juniors Sivan Leoni and Naveh Milo are sitting out the first match of a two-match suspension resulting from an off-season infraction. Senior Jason Ring is not eligible to compete until the second semester under NCAA rules regarding graduation progress for junior college transfers.

"But this will give us a chance to put some guys on the floor that we might not normally see a lot of," said Hawaii coach Mike Wilton. "We lost two real good guys in Yuvi and Erik but we're going to be real good without them. All the guys returning made a real commitment to the weight room and have really stepped up their games. They have really been driven to prepare for this season."

Junior setter Kahinu Lee will be running the Green team that features returnees Mason Kuo and David Tang and three newcomers: redshirt Esteban Escobar, freshman Vinny Massey and Jason Salmeri, a 6-foot-5 transfer from George Mason.

Senior Curt Vaughan will set for the White team that includes Aaron Wilton and Rick Tune, freshmen redshirts Moses Goods and Hans Stolfus, and letter-winners Gavin Cook and Kai Kahele.

There will be a half-hour autograph session after the match.

The Rainbows end their fall training period with three exhibition matches against Stanford during Thanksgiving week. The matches with the Cardinal are on Kauai on Nov. 27, in Hilo on Nov. 28 and in Kona on Nov. 29.
