CU's Robins honored

Danielle Robins, a junior outside hitter for the Chaminade University women's volleyball team, has been named the Player of the Week in the Pacific West Conference.

Robins had 80 kills and 36 digs, hitting .262, as the Silverswords went 4-1 in matches last week to move into a first-place tie with Seattle Pacific.

Because Chaminade (7-1 PWC, 16-7 overall) swept both matches from Seattle Pacific (8-2, 12-7) at McCabe Gym earlier this year, the Silverswords would have to have three losses for the Falcons to have a chance for the conference title.

WILLIAMS LOSES FINAL

At Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, California's Taylor Knox edged Hawaii's Ross Williams by 0.95 of a point to win the Rio Pro Surf meet in smooth-faced, three-foot waves yesterday.

Taylor claimed the $25,000 top prize with an 8.5 score on his final wave.

Williams, 23, brought home $10,000 and is now ranked 19th in the world, guaranteeing him a spot in the Top 44 for the 1997 tour.

WAHINE BLANK SEA WARRIORS

The University of Hawaii women's soccer team shut out Hawaii Pacific, 2-0, yesterday at Ala Wai Field.

Missy Moore scored the first Wahine goal 25 minutes into the match and Wendy Miyashiro iced it with a goal in the final minute.

FIRSTS FOR LYAU, WOKASCH

Jonathan Lyau and Jeannie Wokasch were the winners in the men's and women's divisions, respectively, in the Mid-Pacific Road Runners 30-kilometer race held at Kapiolani Park yesterday.

Lyau finished in one hour, 49 minutes, 27 seconds while Wokasch was timed in 2:03:04.

Michael Georgi (1:50:46) was runner-up in the men's division. Heather Matz (2:05:48) was second in the women's race.

HONOLULU TEAM FOURTH

At Palm Springs, Calif., a women's team from Honolulu lost to St. Louis, 2-1, yesterday in the playoff for third place in the United States Tennis Association's Senior 3.5 League Tennis National Championship.

SURF TOUR RETURNS

The Bud Surf Tour returns to Hawaii tomorrow with the last of eight World Qualifying Series competitions that will decide the U.S. men's and women's surfing champions.

Defending event champion Sunny Garcia heads a strong Hawaii contingent that includes John Shimooka, Larry Rios and former world champ Derek Ho. In the women's division, reigning tour champion Alisa Schwarzstein goes up against defending event champion Megan Abubo and No. 6-ranked Rochelle Ballard, both of Hawaii.

Also on tap is the Morey Bodyboards National Tour stop. Among the top Hawaii competitors is current points leader Spencer Skipper, Mike Stewart, Ben Severson, Kyle Maligro and Kainoa McGee.

Trials will be held daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. off the Turtle Bay Hilton. The finals are set for Makaha Beach on Nov. 2.
