Australia jumps out to
commanding lead

Australia, five-time champion of the Hawaiian International Ocean Challenge, won two of four events yesterday at Makapuu Beach to grab a 41-12-point lead after the first day of competition.

Steve Pullen of Australia took first in the 3.4-mile paddleboard race in 36 minutes, 17 seconds.

Dean Gardiner then won the 4.3-mile kayak race in 27:12, with fellow Australians Martin Kenny and Chris Maynard second and third, respectively, in times of 27:32 and 29:03.

Australia, with 139-12 points, leads New Zealand, 98 points, and California, 95 points.



NISSAN TO HELP RAINBOWS

Nissan Motor Corporation of Hawaii will donate $100 to the University of Hawaii athletics department for every Nissan car sold in Hawaii starting today and ending Nov. 15, UH athletics director High Yoshida announced.

Nissan's president and chief executive Eric Miyasaki expects the venture to raise about $50,000.



BYUH SWEEPS CHAMINADE

Arlete Silva had 15 kills and Daniela Carneiro add 14 as the Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team defeated Chaminade, 15-7, 15-8, 15-8, in a Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match last night at McCabe Gym.

Doris Bikar led the Silverswords (10-4 overall, 1-2 HIAC) with 12 kills. The Seasiders improved to 14-0 and 2-0.



VANGUARDS BEAT SEA WARRIORS

At Costa Mesa, Calif., Southern California College built a 2-0 halftime lead en route to a 3-1 victory over the Hawaii Pacific University women's soccer team yesterday.

Chavela Garza scored for the Sea Warriors (1-4-1) 30 seconds into the second half.



BHAEDHAYJIBH ELIMINATED

At Rancho Mirage, Calif., Kalaya Bhaedhayjibh, of Honolulu, was ousted from the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Golf Championship by Selby Schriber, of Corona Del Mar, Calif., 5 and 4, yesterday.



UH CROSS COUNTRY

The University of Hawaii Invitational Cross Country Meet will be held tomorrow at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.

The women's race starts at 7:15 a.m., with the men's race following at 7:45 a.m.



BYUH HOSTS HPU

The Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's soccer team will be seeking its first victory of the season when the Seasiders host Hawaii Pacific tomorrow at 4 p.m.



KAILUA FUN RUN/WALK

The Friends of Kailua High School are sponsoring a 5-kilometer fun run and walk Sunday starting at 7 a.m. at the school gym.

Sunday's Moanalua-Salt Lake 10-K road race has been canceled due to lack of race directors, entries and volunteers according to spokesperson Joan Davis.
