Toyama obtaining sponsors for
HHSAA state tourneys

Dwight Toyama is telling the Hawaii business community the time has come to get a piece of the action in prep state tournaments.

Toyama, recently installed executive director of the independent Hawaii High School Athletic Association, has flung open the doors to title sponsorship of all 21 state tournaments his association runs.

In the past, the HHSAA has limited title sponsorship of the tournaments to Nissan Motor Corp. for a price tag of $25,000.

But since taking the HHSAA reins last month, Toyama has received four different corporate sponsorship commitments covering five of the tournaments.

Tournaments still available are girls' basketball, boys' and girls' soccer, boys' and girls' cross country, boys' and girls' tennis, boys' and girls' track and field, golf, boys' and girls' swimming and wrestling.

Cross country, one of the largest participatory state championship events with 350 runners, will be held Nov. 22 on the Big Island. Toyama said he expects to sign a new sponsor for it soon.

"I have some more meetings lined up this week," he said. His multi-pronged approach to tournament sponsorship has proved successful for several mainland state associations.

Nissan has signed on to cover sponsorship of the boys' and girls' volleyball tournaments. Baseball will be under the wing of the Wally Yonamine Foundation. Hawaiian Airlines is funding the boys' basketball, as well as the girls' and boys' bowling tournaments.

Bank of Hawaii has also committed to sponsor a tournament, but has yet to choose it.

Toyama said businesses or other organizations interested in bidding to become a title sponsor of a state tournament may contact him at the HHSAA office at 587-4495.

CHAMPS CRUISE

Defending state champions Matt Stevens of Hawaii Baptist Academy and Eri Macdonald of Punahou cruised to victories in the first cross-country meet of the season last weekend at Iolani.

The ILH all-comers meet was not scored.

There will be ILH/OIA meets at four sites - Mid-Pacific, Leilehua, Pearl City and Aiea - this weekend, all starting at 9 a.m.

FOOTBALL TIME CHANGES

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu will start its remaining four football tripleheaders at Aloha Stadium an hour early, according to ILH president Anthony Ramos.

Ramos announced the change after a meeting of ILH principals last Thursday.

The change was prompted after a preseason and a regular-season tripleheader at the stadium ran nearly a half hour past midnight. A rule change that does not permit the clock to start on change of possession until the snap of the ball has lengthened games.

For the next four tripleheaders - Sept. 28, Oct. 12, Oct. 26, and Nov. 2 - the first game will start at 2:30 p.m. The middle game will have a 5 p.m. start and the featured game will begin at 7:30 p.m.

All of these dates are Saturdays.

The next two doubleheaders at the stadium also will start early. On Oct. 4 and Oct. 18, the first game will start at 5 p.m., instead of 5:30 p.m.
