Arce, McPeak upset top seeds

LIHUE - Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak captured their third consecutive major championship on the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour yesterday by winning the Best of the Beach III title.

Seeded second in the 15th and last Evian Tour event of the season, Arce and McPeak defeated the top-seeded team of Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley, 15-7, and split the $15,000 first-place prize.

Mililani's Karrie Poppinga and partner Liz Masakayan finished tied for fifth place and shared $5,625. Honolulu's Danalee Bragado and partner Krista Blomquist tied for seventh and split $4,500.



TITANS EDGE WAHINE

At Fullerton, Calif., Amber Escobedo's game-winning goal at 78 minutes, 19 seconds lifted Cal State Fullerton (3-2) to a 2-1 victory over the University of Hawaii women's soccer team yesterday.

Denise Tsukada's header, off a pass from Tricia Nishikawa, had tied the score for the Wahine (0-4) at 17:40 of the first half.



HUI NALU WOMEN FINISH FIRST

Hui Nalu won the E La Hoe Na Wahine long distance outrigger canoe race from Magic Island to Pokai Bay yesterday with a time of four hours, one minute and 44 seconds.

Lokahi had the first masters crew across the finish line with a time of 4:31.40.



LYAU, NICHOLS TRIUMPH

Jonathan Lyau won the five-kilometer John Hamacher Memorial road race yesterday with a time of 15 minutes, 36 seconds on a course that started at Fort Ruger Triangle Park and toured streets in Kahala.

Katherine Nichols topped the female participants with a time of 17:59.

Chris Crawford was runner-up in the men's division in 16:17, while Rachel Graybill finished second in the women's division with a time of 18:14.



MOYNAHAN TOPS QUALIFYING

At Makena, Maui, Brendan Moynahan shot 36-36-72 to lead yesterday's qualifying for the Aloha Section PGA ZEVO Match Play Championship at the Makena Resort's North Course.

Craig Sasada was runner-up with a 74 while Mark Seki was third at 75.

The first and second rounds are today.



SEASIDERS HONORED

Arlete Silva and Daniele Carneiro of the Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's volleyball team were named to the Northern Michigan Asics Challenge all-tournament team.

Carneiro, a senior All-America candidate, and Silva, an outstanding freshman, led the Seasiders (12-0 overall) to a 4-0 record and the tournament title.

BYUH has won 38 consecutive matches.



UH WOMEN OPEN SEASON

The University of Hawaii women's golf team begins its 1996-97 campaign today in the BYU Invitational at Springville, Utah.

Competing for coach Bobbi Kokx's second Wahine team are Dawn Kaneshiro, Mei Lin Poai, Terry Higa, Desiree Ting and Melissa Shintani.
