Local athletes win medals
Four Hawaii athletes, all kidney transplant recipients, participated in the recent U.S. Transplant Games at Salt Lake City and won eight medals.
Travis Meyer, 9, of Kaneohe, won a silver medal in the 100-meter dash.
Avelina Barsaton, 25, of Waipahu, captured a gold medal in tennis singles, a silver in tennis doubles and a gold in the high jump (18-25 bracket).
Jason Peterson, 34, of Alewa Heights, won a bronze medal in racquetball (26-35 bracket).
Martin Hee, 55, of Kaneohe, took the gold medal in the high jump, a silver in the softball throw and a bronze in the 100-meter dash (45-55 bracket).
SEASIDER MEN OPEN
The Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's soccer team kicks off its inaugural season against the College of Notre Dame (Calif.) tomorrow at 4 p.m. at BYUH.
BYUH plays Hawaii Pacific at 4 p.m. Saturday at HPU's Windward Field.
AMATEUR BOXING CARD SET
A 21-bout amateur boxing card is scheduled for Saturday at the Waianae Regional Park Gym starting at 7 p.m.
Former University of Hawaii fullback Tupu Alualu of Palolo makes his amateur debut in a super heavyweight fight against Kakaako's Michael Ma'ae.
A wahine bout is set between Noel Domen of Waianae who puts a 4-0 record on the line versus Kaneohe's Bridget Len Wai.
Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for ages 8 to 12,with children 7 and under free.
COELHO APPOINTED
Liz Coelho has been named Assistant Sports Media Relations Director at the University of Hawaii by Assistant Athletics Director Jim Donovan.
Coelho, a 1993 UH graduate, served as an administrative assistant under Donovan the last two and a half years.
SAPOLU WANTS CAST OFF NOW
49ers center Jesse Sapolu, who has been snapping left-handed since breaking his right hand in late July, wants the cast removed this week. Sapolu said he is not uncomfortable with the present circumstances - just less comfortable. He wants the cast removed today so he can snap right-handed again.
