Inspired by a queen

Hawaiian poets will give a reading in honor of Queen Lili'uokalani 7 p.m. Sunday at the Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center, 1300 Halona St. The free event features Ho'oipo DeCambra, Haunani Bernardino, Malia Craver, Imaikalani Kalahele and Mahealani Kamauu.



Discussions

Reading group talks about Doris Kearns Goodwin's chronicle of the Roosevelt family during the war years, 6 p.m. Monday at Borders, Waikele. "No Ordinary Time" won a Pulitzer Prize.

The Women's Fiction Reading Group discusses "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn, 6:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at Borders, Waikele.



Author signings

Terry McMillan, author of the novel "Waiting to Exhale," will give a free presentation at the Manele Bay Hotel, Lanai, 8:30 p.m. tomorrow. McMillan's appearance is part of the Visiting Artist Program. Call 800-321-4666 or 548-3700, Lanai.

John Alford talks about the mauka trails in his book, "The Mountain Biker's Guide to Oahu," 2 p.m. Sunday at Barnes & Noble, Kahala.

Riley M. Moffat and Gary L. Fitzpatrick sign copies of their book, "Surveying the Mahele," 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Native Books & Beautiful Things on Merchant Street. The book, second in the Palapala'aina series, traces the mapping of the Hawaiian islands for the transition from traditional tenure to private ownership. "Mahele" and "The Early Mapping of Hawaii" are available as a set through tomorrow for $110 from Native Books.

Ron Martin talks about success and his book, "Success Made Easy," 7 p.m. Thursday at Borders, Kauai.



Writer's workshop

The Honolulu chapter of the National Writers Association meets 7 p.m. Tuesday at Manoa Gardens, 2790 Kahaloa Drive. Writers may bring manuscripts of less than 10 pages for critique (at least six copies are requested). Call Robert Tanouye at 845-9585.



Views from the Ridge

Authors appearing in the current issue of Bamboo Ridge will present poetry and fiction 8 p.m. Thursday at the University of Hawaii Campus Center. The free event begins with a reception 7:30 p.m. in rooms 307-308.

"Fire in the Sea: An Anthology of Poetry and Art": Selected by Sue Cowing, $29.95, 138 pages, University of Hawai'i Press

Poems by Cathy Song, Eric Chock, Juliet Kono and other Pacific islanders are accompanied by lines from Shakespeare, Keats, Langston Hughes and W.S. Merwin, and such sayings as: "Spits straight up/learns something" (Japanese). Alongside the poems are luminous color and black-and-white images of art that, as Cowing says, "make the experience of each doubly memorable."

Bamboo Ridge: A Hawai'i Writers Journal: Edited by Eric Chock and Darrell H.Y. Lum, 339 pages, Bamboo Ridge Press

No. 69 Spring 1996 opens with Chock's essay clarifying Bamboo Ridge's desire to represent the best writing about Hawaii and assessing the issues that have been raised by critics and supporters since its founding in 1978. Selections include a portfolio and profile of ceramic artist Toshiko Takaezu, an excerpt from Shirley Geoklin Lim's "Among the White Moon Faces" and "The Crossing" by Lois-Ann Yamanaka. Subscriptions are $16 for two issues a year.

"Longboarder's Start-Up": Doug Werner, $9.95, 136 pages, Tracks Publishing

Guide to longboard surfing accommodates surfing beginners as well as shortboarders, explaining equipment and the basics as to how pros execute the sweeter maneuvers of the sport. Black-and -white photos show surfers in action; an interview with Bill Stewart illuminates surfboard design.

"Shaping History: The Role of Newspapers in Hawai'i": Helen Geracimos Chapin, $29.95, 345 pages, University of Hawai'i Press

Examination of Hawaii's newspapers, their coverage, influence and business from the advent of the missionaries to modern times, focusing on selected events. Chapin also discusses ethnic and community newspapers, Americanization, labor unions, racism and corporate ownership, and describes individuals such as Heloise Cruse, Frank Fasi and Corky Trinidad.
