Georgi, Rehman run away
with victories in state 25K

Michael Georgi and Alethea Rehman finished atop their respective men's and women's divisions yesterday to win the Road Runners Club of America 25-kilometer Hawaii State Championship held at Schofield Barracks.

Georgi was timed in one hour, 34 minutes, 45 seconds, crossing the finish line almost six minutes ahead of runner-up Frank Pugliese, who was clocked in 1:40:36.

Steve Renstrom came in third with a time of 1:47:56.

Rehman's time of 1:53:25 put her over the finish line well ahead of second-place finisher Colleen Shibata, who was timed in 2:01:45.

Ann Baginski took third place with a clocking of 2:02:41.

In the 75-and-over division, Naoto Inada set a course record with a time of 2:34:10.



KOP WINS PLAYOFF

Brandan Kop defeated Regan Lee in a playoff for the title of the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees' annual golf tournament played at the Pali Municipal Course over the weekend.

Kop and Lee were tied at 142 after finishing 36 holes.

Kelly Mau won the women's division with a net 140.

A flight honors went to Clinton Lee (155), Denis Leong (165) took B flight and William Winkle (171 topped C flight.



SLATER WINS RIP CURL PRO

At Hossegor, France, Kelly Slater claimed his fifth title of the season by beating Damien Hardman in 5- to 7-foot waves in yesterday's final of the Rip Curl Pro surf meet.

Sunny Garcia of Hawaii lost in round four.



MARGERUM BREAKS OWN RECORD

At Eugene, Ore., Joy Margerum ran the 400-meter hurdles in one minute, 4.40 seconds to set an American age group (35-39 years) record last Saturday in the North American, Central American, Caribbean WAVA Regional Track & Field Championships.

Another Hawaii competitor, Ken Wheeler, won the high jump in the 75-79 age group with a leap of 3 feet, 9-1/4 inches.



TENNIS AT KAPALUA

The Wilson Kapalua Open, a major event on Hawaii's Grand Prix tennis circuit, is scheduled to start Friday and run through Sept. 2.

The tournament will be played at The Tennis Garden and The Village Tennis Center at Kapalua.

The Open, in its 16th year, features the largest purse in Hawaii.

Spectators are admitted free.

The entry fee is $45, which includes two events, player's gift packet and admission to the players' party Aug. 31.
