Faumui, Ulufale injuries
stall players' pro hopes

DALLAS - Two defensive linemen from Hawaii - third-year pro Taase Faumui of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys rookie Mike Ulufale - were sidelined at training camp yesterday.

At Latrobe, Pa., defensive tackle Faumui was held out of practice with an injured hamstring. He had been hoping to show what he can do after two injury-plagued seasons for the AFC champions.

The 6-foot-4, 285-pound graduate of Farrington High was a mainstay for the University of Hawaii team that went to the Holiday Bowl in 1992, despite nagging injuries. For the Steelers last year, he played in only three games in the regular season because of a leg injury, but made it onto the active roster for the playoffs.

Ulufale, a former Campbell High and BYU player, is just looking for a chance to get in the rotation with the Super Bowl champion Cowboys, who drafted him in the third round this year. But he hurt his neck and shoulder during practice yesterday at the Cowboys' camp in Austin, Texas.

At 6-8 and 282 pounds, Ulufale has worked out at both defensive tackle and end.

It hasn't been a good training camp for the Cowboys. Safety Roger Harper fractured his right arm in a scrimmage yesterday and was expected to miss at least two months. Tackle Hurvin McCormack suffered a sprained ankle.

And the team should learn soon whether NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue has decided to punish wide receiver Michael Irvin for his recent drug scandal.

Irvin, who showed up in Jimmy Johnson's camp at Miami on Sunday, is absent from the Cowboys while he gets his life back together after pleading no contest to drug possession.

The Cowboys say they aren't counting on former first-round draft pick Shante Carver for the rest of the season after he left camp for what club owner Jerry Jones said were "personal reasons."

An NFL source said those reasons include a pending alcohol-related suspension that could be for as long as one year. The Cowboys reportedly knew of the situation.
