Rainbow Pigskin Pigout
a benefit for UH football

A major fund-raising event for the University of Hawaii football program is scheduled for Aug. 1 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Murphy's Bar & Grill on Merchant Street.

There will be entertainment, an all you can eat suckling pig dinner, refreshments plus live and silent auctions for sports memorabilia, collectibles, neighbor island trips, a 49er weekend and other prizes.

The Rainbow coaching staff will be on hand to meet guests. Sportscaster Jim Leahy will be the MC.

Tickets are $50 and all proceeds go to the football program through its booster organization, NaKoa.

Tickets can be ordered by calling Murphy's at 531-0442 or Sweeney Communications at 533-0033. Checks should be made out to NaKoa and contributions are tax deductible.

All costs for the evening are being donated by Murphy's.



CHIN, ISHII LEAD QUALIFYING

David Chin and David Ishii teamed up to post a 30-33-63 yesterday in the qualifying round of the Aloha Section PGA Top-flite Four-Ball Match Play tournament.

Stefan Carlsmith and Jay Taise were second with a 65. Rick Castillo and Ron Castillo Jr. were another stroke back in third place.

The top 15 qualifying teams join defending champs Tommy Hines and Randy Mitchell in the field that competes today and tomorrow at the Oahu Country Club.



HAWAII ATHLETES FARE WELL

Competitors from Hawaii reaped 23 gold medals, four silver medals and five bronze medals at the United States Judo Federation Junior Nationals held in Oakland, Calif., June 29-30.

JUNIOR BOWLING TOURNAMENT

The Hawaii Junior Bowling Singles Tournament, featuring top bowlers from California, Colorado, Washington, Hawaii and four from Japan, will be held at Aiea Bowl starting Friday at 8:30 a.m.

The bowlers will compete for 30 games leading up to the stepladder finals on Monday.



VULCANS SIGN FORWARD

Lars Hasselbach, a 6-foot-8 power forward from Germany, will join the University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball team this fall.

Vulcans coach Jim Forkum first saw Hasselbach on videotape, then had a chance to watch the 220-pounder at a practice in Germany. Hasselbach competed for Paderborn Baskets, a second-division team, averaging nine points and five rebounds a game.



UTAH JAZZ CAMP

The Utah Jazz will conduct their seventh annual Camp and Clinic, Aug. 8-10, at Pearl Harbor's Bloch Arena. The featured player is Jeff Hornacek.

Boys and girls, ages 8-12, will meet from 8 a.m. to noon. Boys and girls, ages 13-18, will meet from 1 to 5 p.m. The cost is $115.

The Jazz also will offer a series of free clinics, the dates and locations to be announced later.

LONG-DRIVE COMPETITION

Maui's Makena Resort will host the district semifinals for the 1996 RE/

MAX North American Long Drive Competition Aug. 3.

The competition begins at 2 p.m. on the 10th tee of Makena's South golf course. The winners advance to the Sept. 6-11 finals at Las Vegas.



WALLY FUJIYAMA BENEFIT

The third and final Wally Fujiyama golf benefit will be held Aug. 8 - his birthday - at the Makaha Valley Country Club.

The first two tournaments honoring the late attorney raised more than $70,000 for the University of Hawaii Foundation and the Department of Education.
