Honolulu Academy of Arts, 900 S. Beretania St., 532-8700. "The Ceramic Tradition of Asia" features works from different regions and cultures, on view Saturday through July 1997.

Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, 2454 S. Beretania St., 945-7633. "Strength and Diversity: The Story of Japanese American Women in Hawaii," adapted from the original exhibit at the National Japanese American Historical Society-Oakland Museum, opens July 24. "Strength" chronicles the life stories and contributions of four generations of women, from plantation to contemporary community. Show continues through Jan. 17.

Three exhibits feature contemporary works through Sept. 8. "Public Art" is from the collection of the City and County of Honolulu; "Leaving the Century," videos by 20 media artists, arrives from the Video Data Bank, Chicago; "Exquisite Vessels" in ceramic, metal, glass, wood and fiber were acquired through the Sibyl Heide Fund.

"Century" presents "Cultural Identities" through July 28; "Self Regard," July 30 through Aug. 11; "Framing Politics," Aug. 13 through 25; "Women Unveiled," Aug. 27 through Sept. 8.

Contemporary Museum's Honolulu Advertiser Gallery, 605 Kapiolani Blvd., 525-8066. "Local Style 2," works by Hawaii artists such as Mabel Alvarez, Jean Charlot, Isami Doi, Franco Salmoiraghi, Toshiko Takaezu and others, on view through July.

Lecture: By Nancy Moore Bess, a basketmaker writing a book based on her research on bamboo in Japan, 7:30 p.m. Friday, UH-Manoa's Art Auditorium. Bess, who takes inspiration from historic armor construction, Japanese folk art and packaging and African jewelry and vessels, talks about finding inspiration and the balance between gallery and commission work. ArtSpree '96: Collage artists provide hands-on lessons for children of all ages at the Contemporary Museum's open house, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The free day features artist demonstrations, dancing stilt-walkers and more. Shuttle provided from Roosevelt High School. Call 526-1322.

Aloha Show: The Association of Hawaii Artists will present a show in August of recent art by members. Works must not have appeared previously in any juried show in Hawaii. Entries may be submitted 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 9 at Honolulu Hale; entry fee is $20, for up to three works. (Membership is $30 per year; $15 for students.) Call Elisabeth Knoke at 923-1711.

Arts Hawaii Festival: Visual and performing artists and musicians needed for festival Aug. 17 and 18 at Thomas Square. Artists and crafters may submit photos or slides of their works until Aug. 1. Call DBEDT at 587-2767 for an application form.
