TODAY

"Discover the Magic of Reading": State libraries begin their summer reading programs for children in June. Sponsors offer incentives for readers who finish a book each week. Call your local library for more information.

The Kalihi-Palama Library holds an Early Registration Party 2:30 p.m. Monday. Its program, for seventh graders to the Class of '96, runs June 10 through July 27. Call 832-3466.

The Pearl City Library program, for book lovers who in September will be in preschool through sixth grade, runs June 12 through July 27. Call 453-6566.



THURSDAY

Kaimuki Library: Storytime for children ages 3 to 5 at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays in May. Call 733-8422.



SATURDAY

Day Reef Walk: Explore along the shore and reef during the spring's low tides with naturalists from the Waikiki Aquarium who guide discoveries and discuss marine life, safety and conservation. Costs $8 adults, $7 children. Register by mail. Call 923-9741.

Kalihi-Palama Library: Kids enjoy "Cool Treats" - flavorful stories and tasty yogurt samples - 10 a.m. Register at 832-3466.

Incredible Insects: Explorers 3 and older enter the strange world of "inside out" animals, 1 to 3 p.m. at the Hawai'i Nature Center on Maui. Costs $5. Reserve at 244-6500, Maui.

Expression Session: Children ages 5 to 12 exercise their artistic ability while their parents tour the galleries of the Contemporary Museum, 1:30 to 3 p.m. Richard Gerage focuses on color and teaches weaving with cut paper. Costs $10 general. Reserve at 526-1322.



SUNDAY

Treemendous Trees: Children ages 3 to 5 go on a short hike into the forest to meet some living giants and make a leaf print to remember them by, 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Hawai'i Nature Center. Costs $5. Reserve at 955-0100.

Story and craft time: Fun activities with Brenda Freitas-Obregon from the Kalihi Library, noon at Barnes & Noble, Kahala.



LOOKING AHEAD

Snooze in the Zoo: Lie with the lions or be a dreamer with the lemurs at a Honolulu Zoo camp-out 6 p.m. June 7. Participants enjoy folktales, songs and a tour with zookeepers. Costs $27 adults, $25 children. Call 971-7195.

Archaeology of Makiki Valley: Young Indiana Joneses, teens and older, explore Makiki sites, 1:30 to 4 p.m. June 8. Costs $5. Call Hawai'i Nature Center at 955-0100.

Summer music: Musicians 8 and older who have had at least a year of instruction on a string instrument must apply by June 10 to join the Hawaii Youth Symphony Association. The Summer Strings program meets one hour daily weekdays, June 17 through July 26 at the UH-Manoa Music Department. Costs $100. Call 941-9706. Instruments are available for summer rental.
