Morenz 2nd-team All-American

Slugger Tia Morenz became only the second University of Hawaii softball player ever to achieve All-American status when she was named yesterday to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I second team as the designated player.

Last season, the 5-foot-6 sophomore from Pueblo, Colo., set single-season UH records for batting average, (.376), runs scored (51) and stolen bases (26). She was named last week to the All-West Region first team.

Last year, pitcher Brooke Wilkins became the first Wahine All-American.

'BOWS GET ACADEMIC HONORS

Four University of Hawaii volleyball players were named yesterday to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's Academic All-Conference team. They included outside hitters Yuval Katz and Aaron Wilton and middle blockers Sivan Leoni and Rick Tune.

The 19 student-athletes from eight universities were named to the team for meeting several criteria: they had a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, attained a sophomore or higher standing academically and competed in at least 50 percent of the institution's competitions.

GARCIA ADVANCES

At Torami Beach, Japan, Hawaii's Sunny Garcia, the top seed, easily won the opening round of the Marui Pro surf meet, beating Brazil's Renan Rocha and Japan's Mineto Ushikoshi in the three-man heat.

Other Hawaii surfers competing in the 3- to 4-foot waves yesterday were Shane Dorian, Conan Hayes, Derek Ho, Kaipo Jaquias, Kalani Robb, John Shimooka and Ross Williams.

Competing in the women's division are Hawaii's Megan Abubo, Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly.

BYUH WOMEN ADVANCE

At Tulsa, Okla., Brigham Young University-Hawaii's Anneli Ornstedt and Theresa Stromberg advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tennis Championships yesterday. The Seasiders also continued to have a shot at the team title, hanging just two points behind leader Lynn (Fla.).

Ornstedt, the 1994 singles champion, and Stromberg, named the NAIA newcomer of the year, also are in the fourth round of doubles, as are Mimi Liu and Maylani Ah Hoy.

In men's competition, BYUH's remaining players were eliminated yesterday.
