Within the next few weeks, Brummel hopes shooting guard Anthony Carter will join the Rainbow ranks. The 6-foot-1 Carter was the leading scorer among all California junior college players, averaging 28 points a game.
"He's the best player I've ever had," said Brummel, whose team finished 27-6 this past season. "He can play point and off-guard, passes as well as scores."
Brummel also had high praise for the two players from whom Hawaii has obtained verbal commitments. Kahuku High product Kawika Akina, a 5-10 guard from Dixie College in Utah, and Michael Robinson, a 6-8 small forward out of Lassen College in California, have committed to play for the Rainbows next season.
"Akina is a tough kid, a strong defensive player," said Brummel. "And getting Robinson is big. He's really going to help them."
Today is the first day to sign binding national letters of intent.
Carter has not made his campus visit to Hawaii but is expected to do so within the next two weeks. The Rainbows signed 6-10 Kelvin Anderson of McCook (Neb.) College during the early signing period last November.
Hawaii needs to replace three seniors - forward Justice Sueing and guards Whitlock and Anthony Harris. The Rainbows have also lost two guards: freshman Sam Smith and redshirt freshman Quentin Gallon, both of whom will be transferring to junior colleges.
Smith said yesterday he hopes to return to Hawaii for his junior year after improving his grades.
