State aquaculture industry improving

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources said Hawaii's aquaculture producers are projected to harvest around $15 million in products this year.

That's a jump from the 1995 estimate of $13 million dollars and a 66 percent increase from the $9 million in revenue reported in 1994.

The DLNR said the growth of the industry has been fueled by increasing seaweed and microalgae production for food and specialty chemicals, as well as the farming of new species.

Department Chairman Michael Wilson said aquaculture provides a basis for restoration of depleted ocean fish stocks for commercial and recreational use.

Maui home sales higher for quarter

WAILUKU - The Maui Board of Realtors said single-family home sales on the island improved in the first quarter of this year, but the condominium market continues to languish.

The dollar volume of single-family transactions was up 33 percent from the first quarter last year to nearly $30 million.

Sixty-three single-family houses were sold a year ago at an average price of $353,000. This year, 79 homes were sold at an average of $376,000.

Although total condo sales exceeded total house sales, the condo total was lower than in the first three months of 1995.

The dollar volume was $32 million from 120 transactions. That represents an 8 percent reduction in dollar volume and 5 percent fewer transactions.
