Gondola gala for 75th birthday fete

THE newly named Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel became the Splendid Kahala Venetian the other night. It was Helga Hollenback's 75th birthday and a select party for 50 took place in the hotel ballroom, transformed into a microcosm of Venice. The sets and backdrops were designed by Georg James and John Dinsmore and executed by the local firm, Show Connection Ltd. A customized table was built and decorated to represent the various canals of Venice and the elaborate setting was enhanced with more than 10,000 fresh flowers from Timothy's Victorian Garden. Edwin Hollenback, who staged the masquerade gala, coaxed Martin Denny out of retirement to provide entertainment for the celebrants. And if the Kahala Mandarin seems an odd choice as a venue for a Venetian evening, remember that the famed Orient Express, in a trip that's anything but murderous, now runs between London and Venice ...

THE UH's Judith Hughes has been given a permanent appointment as dean of arts and humanities at Manoa. And since her maiden name is Dean, she can now be addressed as Dean Judith Dean Hughes ... James V. Hall, who works as a writer in the office of the mayor, has written a new book called "To Win the Hearts." No, it's not a quest of Mayor Jeremy Harris but a novel that draws on Hall's personal experiences in Vietnam working "as part of a government agency." That's sometimes translated as CIA, but I'm not one to jump to conclusions. In any case, Hall will be signing books at Barnes & Noble at the Kahala Mall on April 23 at 7:30 p.m. ...

HONOLULU attorney Clinton Ashford, a retired senior partner of Ashford and Wriston, has resigned after seven years as chief justice of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. In that role, he could live in Honolulu and fill his duties with regular visits there. But now he's stepping down, citing political meddling in a pending court case by none other than the legislature and chief executive ...

Chris Kanazawa
AMFAC president Chris Kanazawa made the "honor roll" at August Ahrens Elementary School. Amfac presented a golf cart to the Waipahu elementary school recently, and it happened to be on the morning of the school's Technology Fun Run. First grader Alfred Marquez became ill during one of the laps and had to be rushed from the field to the nurse's office. Voila, the golf cart was put to immediate use transporting the youngster. Talk about a fore-tuitous gift! ...

Moving mural

PEOPLE who encounter the large new mural by artist Ron Croci at McCully Shopping Center almost always are moved upon viewing it. That's because the mural, including a waterfall and pond, lush foliage, bright flowers and birds, is located in the center's glass elevator. The mural is even visible from the street and is illuminated at night. Croci also has created backgrounds for "Magnum, P.I." and did the 360-foot mural in the movie "Ghostbusters." ...
