UH swimmer in nationals

University of Hawaii swimmer Peter Struglinski will participate in the NCAA Championships this weekend in Austin, Texas.

The junior from Kazimierz Busu upi, Poland, qualified for the NCAA meet with a strong showing in the Western Athletic Conference Championships.

Struglinski will compete in the 100 breaststroke event on Friday and in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday. He is ranked ninth and third, respectively, in the events.

His best times are 55.17 seconds in the 100 and 1:58.67 in the 200, both coming in the WAC meet.



PERNO, MURPHY WIN

Donn Perno and Todd Murphy rallied from two strokes down at the start of yesterday's final round to win the Aloha Section PGA Pro-Pro Best Ball Championship at the Makalei Course on the Big Island.

Perno and Murphy shot a 63 yesterday for a 136 total. The victory was worth $750.

Robert Icban and Tommy Hines shot a 67 yesterday to finish second with a 138. Wade Nishimoto and Aaron Bengoechea were third with a 138.



WAHINE SPLIT

The University of Hawaii Wahine won the opener of a Big West Conference doubleheader last night by defeating San Jose State, 10-1, at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Spartans salvaged the final game of the four-game series with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.

Kelly Gentle won her 13th game of the season in the opener on a two-hitter.

The Wahine are 23-12 overall, 5-5 in conference play.



SILVERSWORDS WIN TWO

The Chaminade women's softball team defeated UC San Diego in both ends of a nonconference doubleheader by 7-0 and 9-4 scores at Cartwright Field yesterday.

Kristen Varagne pitched a complete game in the opener and the final four innings in the second game to earn both victories.

Marissa Vasper had two RBIs in the first game and hit a three-run homer in the second.



MEDEL HURLS SHUTOUT

At Hilo, UH-Hilo's Jennifer Medel scattered five hits, fanned three and walked none in blanking Baker (Kan.) University, 4-0, last night.

Julie Bock had three hits and two RBIs and Olga Martinez had three hits for the Vulcans (15-9).

In the second game, Kelly Kohatsu doubled and scored on a single by Debbie Nakabayashi in the bottom of the 13th inning to give UHH a 2-1 victory.

Medel pitched the last three innings for the win.



ARIZONA HAS BIG LEAD

The University of Arizona grabbed a 15-stroke lead after yesterday's opening round of the Rainbow Wahine Intercollegiate golf tournament at the Kaneohe Klipper Course.

The Wildcats were at 288, with Texas Tech next at 303.

The Wahine were tied for eighth place with the University of San Francisco at 324.

Arizona had the top four individuals led by Heather Graff, who fired a one-under-par 71.

UH's Dawn Kaneshiro, Mei-Lin Poai and Kim Mastre were tied for 28th place after shooting 80s.
