Lights out on Likelike make driving dangerous

QUESTION: How much longer must we endure the "dim-out" on the Windward side of Likelike Highway? From the end of the tunnel to the new H-3 overpass well more than half of the lights are out and that makes driving dangerous. At one time all the lights were out but now fewer than half are working.

ANSWER: You should get some relief soon. The state Highway Department's night crew works from 10:15 p.m. today to 6:45 a.m. tomorrow. Light fixture replacements are done at night but the department has a night crew working only one night each week, on Thursdays.

For readers in other areas on Oahu who want to report light problems along state roads, call the Oahu district highway office at 831-6702 during daytime working hours, said Ross Smith, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

There also is a state highway repair hot line, 831-6714, on which messages may be left at any hour. If you are reporting lights out or other highway problems, try to be specific on the locations so the repair crew doesn't waste time searching for the area.
