Elimimian, Estes on watch lists
Two Hawaii football players were recently named to watch lists for major awards.
Warriors senior linebacker Solomon Elimimian is among 88 players getting early consideration for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, awarded annually to the best defensive player in college football by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. Elimimian has 304 career tackles.
UH junior John Estes and 43 other players are on the 2008 spring watch list for the Rimington Trophy. This award goes to the top center in college football each year and is presented by the Boomer Esiason Foundation. The center with the most votes on four All-American teams receives the honor.
Estes, who has started every game in his two seasons, is also on the early list for the Lombardi Award, which goes to the game's top interior lineman or linebacker.
Irons advances in Billabong Pro Tahiti
Three-time world champion Andy Irons of Kauai won his first-round heat to move into today's third round of the Billabong Pro Tahiti surf contest at Teahupoo.
Also winning his opening heat was Oahu's Poncho Sullivan. Kauai's Bruce Irons finished second in his heat and will surf in today's second round.
Jamie O'Brien of Oahu was third in his first-round heat then was eliminated by current ratings leader Kelly Slater in one of five second-round heats that were held before competition was halted yesterday.
Gatorade soccer award to Dydasco
Zane Dydasco, a senior midfielder and defender for state champion Kamehameha, has been named the Gatorade boys soccer player of the year for Hawaii.
The 5-foot-7, 165-pound senior scored six goals and had two assists for the Warriors (16-2-2) this season. He had the match-tying goal in Kamehameha's shootout win over Kamehameha-Maui in the state semifinals and played sweeper in the championship match against Punahou, earning the most outstanding player honor for the state tournament.
Dydasco will attend the Air Force Academy Prep School this fall. He is now eligible for the national honor that will be announced later this month.

Hawaii Pacific signs 2 in basketball
Junior college players Clifford Hodge and Jeff Ingram have signed to play basketball for Hawaii Pacific.
Hodge is a 6-foot-4 forward transferring from Central Arizona. He was named to the Central Valley Conference all-freshman team in 2007.
Ingram, a 6-4 guard, also played for Central Arizona.
